In the previous year, I'm noticing more Whirlwinds, Vindicators, and devaststor squads in transports.
Has there been a change in opinion about the predator? I know an all-lascannon one is expensive, and one with AC/HB is wonderful against horde/troop spammed forces.
Is there something I'm missing?
Also on the subject, is it worth running a predator without a sponsons choice?
Thanks in advance.
I find predators extremely worth their points. I do tend to play against more horde-ish type armies. (IG and Orks). At only 105 pts (AC, HB, SB, HK), this thing shreds units in a turn.
Also, its very excellent against light vehicles. Sentinels, trukks, speeders, etc. It usually destroys them, or completely neuters them in just 1 turn of firing.
Its relatively cheap, and with good positioning on a key fire lane, units don't tend to make it to there destination unscathed.
There has been a big thread on the Space Marines forum about Predators recently, look here.
Other than that: for me they aren't worth a slot. They compete with whirlwinds and vindicators for slots who are at least as good against hordes and don't lose two thirds of their firepower on the move.
And if I want many shots I'll take some tornado landspeeders, for example the one with the two heavy bolters. A good and very versatile landspeeder option is the typhoon. It's cheaper than your AC/HB predator and though more vulnerable it has the same range and more flexible weaponry. It's at least as good a light vehicle hunter and as good against hordes too. And better against MEQ.
I need mobility in my army. Either I take vindicators (or sometimes whirlwinds) for my heavy support, or I take landspeeders to get my anti-horde count up. Actually it's not one or the other: I do both. But I don't take predators...
The Baal predator is the only one I would take. Its ability to move as a fast vehicle and its twin-linked assault cannon are just awesome. But I don't play Blood Angels, so I don't have this option.
Then again the Thunderfire is pretty cool. Not good, but cool. Quite efficient too when you think about it; Bolsters a ruin or a building, fires four Blasts per turn, plus once the gun gets destroyed... wayhey, free Techmarine! xDI think it might be for a footslogging Space Wolf or Black Templars army. Six Autocannon shots per turn moving 6" plus three pieces of mobile AV13 front terrain to use as cover for 180pts doesn't sound massively awful to me.Also on the subject, is it worth running a predator without a sponsons choice?
I am still a big fan of the Ac HB Predator. I usually run 2 in my 2k army list. For 85 points they are amazing I have always had more luck witht them than I have with my whirlwinds, and my fast slots are there for antitank land speeders(another awesome choice).
I agree with the above poster about the Baal predator, it is pure awesome, apparently the other chapters could learn a few things about tanks from the blood angels.
The AC/HB Predator is one of the best buys in the Codex, there's always room for at least 1 of them.

All of the Heavy Support available on the Codex are well worth its points, depending on how you intend to use them.
On my case, I seldom have anything else on the Heavy Support other that a Predator with AC/HB and a Vindicator and they always prove to cause some sort of problems to my enemies.
The fact that the enemy will direct fire to them shouldn't be a surprise for you.
Bottom line, yes! They are worth it. It just depends on how do you use them!
Although I'm experimenting with two Vindicators in my mech list currently there is always room to swap in a Dakka Predator. This tank is usually my single stationary heavy support that I park in the most advantageous firing lane every game. It's never failed me.
Point for point they are one of the most reliable heavy support vehicles I use as I face a lot of troops and light vehicle mech lists frequently.

I feel like Predators fill a niche, but only because there's not a whole lot of better options in the heavy support section.
Land Raiders in general are too expensive to take 3 of them, so you've still got 2 slots. Devastators are too expensive in general, which is why everyone seemed to blow their load once the Long Fangs popped up in SW (and though they're much better than Devastators, I think people have come down off their high a bit). Thunderfire Cannons look great on paper until you realize that a lucky slugga shot will kill it.
Whirlwinds and Vindicators are both fairly reasonable fighters, which is why you see them a lot. Personally I don't like Whirlwinds, they're a little expensive imo, but I understand why other people like them. Vindicators are one of the more fun things to run, so I can see them being used a lot.
So we basically have 3 viable units, whirlwinds, land raiders, and vindicators, aside from predators. At that point it comes down to play style as to which ones you take.
As for whether sponsons are worth it, they're pretty much the key thing that seperates it from a razorback, which is cheaper.
