How do you build your army?

Basically from the way I see it there are two different ways to go about building your army. One is to pick your hq and map it out the way you want and build the rest of your army out of the remaining points to support and protect them. The other is to build your army and select your hq based on remaining points and to shore up a week spot. These are the only two ways that have really occured to me but if there are others please point them out. I was just curious as to how most of you go about with your army construction. I tend to build my army and place the hq as an afterthought. Anyway looking forward to the responses.

I build my army around what i want the centre point of my army to be then i build off that. If my centre point is a HQ then i put that first but if it is 2 LR filled with GK's (for my DH) then that is first and everything is put in after. For my recent SW list i wanted 2 drop podding dreads which obviously went in first. THen some DP GH as well to support the dreads. and another squad of GH to hold my home objectives as well a couple of vindicators to move up to support Dreads and GH. Lastly i had 350pts left so thats when i added a Hq and WG. But it all depends on what you want to do and what your theme for the army is.

I build my armies to be as hard to beat as possible. This usually starts with an idea, like all mech, all foot, abusing a certain unit/s.

My IG list was built as mixed mech. I knew I wanted a good amount of armor and a good amount of static men. Now I have to decide what armor to run and what static elements to run. Than I break it down further, what guns do I want, what upgrades, what job/s does each entry have?

Now that I have a rough draft I comb over it with commonly played armies. Can I beat Mechdar, Rhino Rush, Green Tide, AirCav, Dual Lash etc. If I'm happy with that answer, I move on to more niche lists, if I'm not happy I go back and address my weaknesses without losing to many strengths.

It's a process but I always end up with very winning armies. Every unit is a means to an end, part of a bigger picture. I always want at least 3 units able to do the big jobs i.e. horde killing, MEQ killing, armor busting, objective taking and either assaulting or assault delaying.

    In depth but effective.

No matter what the army, I tend to start with the troops, not the HQ. I used to start with the "fun" stuff, leaving the "spare points" to the troops.

Now, in 5th edition, since troops matter so much, I start with 3-4 full squads of troops first, then I decide how I will deliver them. Will they have transports, infiltrate/outflank, use extra speed (bikes, jump packs, or other means) to move fast, or will they *gasp* footslog?

Once I've dealth with all that, it often suggests where to go next.
Mickey: "You're just making this up as you go along!"
The Doctor: "Yuuuup. But I do it brilliantly!"

I tend to think of a play style or strategy I want to use and then build from there if I'm doing a fun list.

If I'm being competative then I suppose Troops are first.

I'll usually first try to decide what I want my army to do and then build it from that idea. This does vary what I'd choose to pick first though, as if I want my army to do something specific like be all bike or whatever, then I'd pick the appropriate HQ that allows me to do that first then start choosing the rest. Otherwise if it's something that doesn't need a specialised HQ then I'll just go troops first, then HQ, then the extra goodies.

I almost always build the army first, HQ last. HQ can be fun and have spiffy abilitys but the actual win or loss comes down the list not the guy leading them. In my current list my only Hq is a cheap termy chaplain that hangs out with my assault termies to give them a reroll on the charge.

A lot of HQ are overpriced in my opinion, I'd rather add 2 dreadnaughts or something else instead of one HQ.

I also like to build an army around an idea more than any one specific unit or group of units. Now sometimes that idea is captured by a group of units such as a land raider spear head but more often not I do usually start working on troops before HQ's but that is more because troops are generally the main element of my idea.
Brute force ALWAYS works, its just a question of having enough of it!
