Ok, I played my first game as guard today and I ran across a major problem...
I got spearhead deployment and was barely able to even put all my forces on the table. Then my chimeras that are supposed to zoom around got stuck behind my sentinels, guardsmen and hellhound, it was just horrible. It took me all 5 rounds of the game to get them out and then they only got to heavy flamer one unit. I ended up only winning the game by 2 victory points, it was scary.
This post isn't really serious, but as mostly a dark eldar and marine player I never considered traffic jams to be something I needed to think about when planning my army.
Edit: By the way I had 4 russ's, 4 chimeras, 4 sentinels, a hellhound and a medusa plus 1 big unit of guard.
You squad Russes? Terrible. I've never had a problem deploying and I run a sizable amount of men and 5 tanks in 1500. Spearhead still gives good room and your Sentinels should be Outflanking unless they're Armored, which aren't that great in the first place.
I just don't see the problem unless you're afraid of terrain or had a small table.

i get everything traffic jammed unless they're skimmers
for me it's really just a mark of being an inexperianced player
I have to agree with Kelter Skelter and Kgoreham, being my first guard game I would say I am very inexperienced and in the future I will definitely be choosing the side with less terrain if I get the option. It wouldn't have nearly been so bad if it wasn't spearhead for this game.
As far as having two squads of two Russes this just came down to me having 4 russes and a medusa that I painted up and wanted to use in my first game.
The sentinels were two squads of two armored ones but I stand by that decision as on my first turn one unit of two assaulted a unit of 6 grey knight terminators that came out of a vendetta and held them up for the entire game. My other two stopped a unit of ogryn and eventually killed them all. These were two units that would have caused me untold grief but for my sentinels.
And to repeat, I don't think traffic jams are really a serious problem for guard, this was just my initial experience on my first game with them
GKTs can't go inside vendettas.
just leave some of your elements in reserves, they come in along the entire long board edge so they can potentially get side or even rear shots if they have mobile fire power.

Killed a Revenant Titan in one shot.
Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
"GKTs can't go inside vendettas."
I have seen two different guard players do this at my game store. Can you link me the rule or page that states that they can't go in a vendetta or valkyrie. I'm not disagreeing with you but I don't have a daemonhunters book and would like to be able to look it up when I am at the store next time. I don't use valks or vendettas as my guard are Traitors and I felt that that would be unfluffy so I haven't paid too much attention to the tricks that can be done with them.
One of the guys who does this was also taking Ogryns off as casualties when they only took one wound so it may be just that they don't have a clear idea of the rules. We have such a large number of players that there is a big range of experience at my game store.
I will have to try that next time I get a spearhead mission MadLarkin.
Its on the FAQ on the GW website.
