I've recently taken a tolerance to terminators (i previously did not like terminator models, or spending too many points on any single model in my horde marine army). I digress...
I've improvised this cyclone launcher. do you approve or not?
it is made of a jump pack, some tau missile pods, a magnet and some green stuff
its magnetized (obvious, i know)
that is a space hulk termy. i love my chainfists. my other wolf guard termie has dual chainfists (not exactly points efficient, but it looks sweet), which i converted with chainswords. the chainfists look extra sweet due to the longer blades from the chainswords.
on an unrelated question, can terminators have 25mm bases? i did a google picture search of 40k termies, and enough showed up with the smaller bases. not to mention, the older (back in the day) termy models came stock with them. i know it's possible model-wise, and i've seen it. The question is, strictly speaking, is it legal?
Re: bases. The larger bases are the accepted norm. I don't think there is a rule stating that they have to be mounted on the larger bases but they do look odd on them. In games terms it'll mean the measuring of shooting ranges could be affected and models getting into base contact for CC might cause issue.
To be on the safe side I'd stick with teh accepted 40mm size.
Hope that helps.
I think it looks pretty awesome from the back, but as the guy with the long troublesome name said the missiles are quite high up when you look upon him from the front..
I'd also consider another rack of missiles.. Though I'm not much of a converter so don't listen to me really..
As for the bases I think they must be placed on the same bases they would be if the same unit was bought from GW today..
Now I'm not sure if there's still terminators being sold with one inch bases.. The old metal librarian maybe..
40mm and you're on the safe side of everything though.
Base size isn't all that important in 40k compared to so many other games though.. It takes alot of micromanagement for you to get any considerable advantage of it..
Personally I don't approve. It's creative, no hate there but it just looks way to clunky and alien. Imperial guns don't have such pretty curves, they're blocks that shoot propane death.
I still applaud the effort to make your models stand out.

They're a little too high up. Makes the Terminator look off-balance instead of hulking. Plus, the way the missile pods are stuck onto the jump pack vents doesn't make sense. They're kind of angled away from the jump pack, if you get what I mean. It looks like they're shooting in different directions.
Overall, good attempt, needs work.

They're too high up, look like eye-stalks, and it's also painfully obvious that you've turned a jump pack upside down, glued some Missile Pods to the exhausts then stuck it to his back.
All that said I don't see why this can't be made to work with a bit of cleaning up. Shaving down the exhausts would lower the pods a bit, and from there it's a case of green-stuffing a few bits of detail onto the Pods themselves so it's not immediately apparent that they've been ripped from the Tau sprue. I'd personally centre them as well so they're pointing forward, otherwise it looks a bit buggy, but that's just me being OCD.
In my defense, I wasn't aiming for impressive, but passable. Basically I wasn't trying to make my army stand out, simply trying to have a cyclone - since those are not available right now
I like the trimming down idea. I'll run with that
and for good measure, here's the cyclone on a termy whose torso is upright
this is the double chainfist termy i mentioned earlier
thank you all for the suggestions, it really helped
That looks much better. ;-) If you have any other odds and sods in your bits box that you could glue on to detail it a bit, that would be a good idea. Like Imp Eagles, purity seals, top of a mm (the twin tubular bits). They would make the jump pack look a litle less.......like a jump pack.
Great idea for the twin chainfists. Like the concept alot. Shame there are no legal rules for it. ;-(
Since you clearly have greenstuff, (chainfist conversion,) I would suggest using that to touch up the conversion on his back, to make it look slightly less like a upside-down jetpack and more like the massive platform for missiles that it is.
Terminator armor going critical would be like Three Mile Island only very, VERY angry, and carrying a hammer.
LO rules in a nutshell: Don't post unit costs, be polite, rep posts containing of win.
