One question about your army list - Where's the second troop choice?
My 2nd troop choice is storm troopers with grenadier. (sry, forgot to write that down)
OK here is the problem, IG can be very good in a number of ways, but you are trying to do most of them all at once and you just aint got the figures or points to carry it off.
I really think you need to decide on a tilt to your army and then go down that route, for example:
Infantry based: you have a large troop base, you dont spend points on ay single expensive thing or elite infantry (i.e. dont take the Leman russ, the Storm troopers or the Sentinal) mix up your special weapons, take some heavy weapons squads, and loads and loads of guardsmen. Dont waste points on doctrines you dont need (take sharp shooters on your heavy weapons squad ONLY, stay away from cameliline, carapice armour etc
Armoured companies - speak for themselves,
Grenadiers/Storm troopers tend to be a bit of dificult subject, they are far more expensive than normal guard, because they are elite, unfortunatley, whilst they are elite guard, they tend to be a bit pap compaired to everyone elses elite, I wouldnt recomend a new player use them until they are comfortable with the way their army plays
Drop troop armys - an interesting twist on the infantry army is to tke a drop troop based army, forge the heavy weapons, take loads of troops and special weapons and deep strike every damn thing. - A lot harder to be sucessfull with than a standard army but a usefull progression once a new guy has got familiar with the basics of an all infantry army.
The standard slight mix: the most commonsort of generic mix:
Senior officer, (various tweaks of wargear, weaponry and doctrines)
Couple of Heavy weapons squads
May be a singl vets or Storm trooper squad
2 Inf platoons, each with 2 squads
couple of sentinal, interestingly enough, not often with multilasers
A Leman russ (possibly demolisher variant)
That plus an odd chimera is a kind of generic IG army, but IMHO is a lot harder to use than an all infantry army
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I tend to try and put as many models on the table as I can with my Guard, if you have enough models try conscipts as a troop choice (in addition to a full regular platoon if you can fill it) the conscipts will work out to be a 50 model unit for 200 points.
Sentinels are one of my sick loves, they always seem to come through for me in a game but maybe I'm lucky.
A friend of mine has a storm trooper / hardened vet drop troop army. When its hot its hot, and when its not its not. Always a lot of fun though.
Your best bet is trial and error. Try not to load up on upgrades that arent cost effective, one of your big advantages is that your troops are cheap.
If you really want to play tyranids that badly, stay far far away from close combat (which is true for playing almost any foe). Against eldar, I try to take as many shots per turn as I can. Usually this means conscipts, an auto cannon squad, a hvy bolter squad and sentinels with multi-lasers, maybe a command squad (multi laser / storm-bolter pintle) chimera or a hellhound.
EDIT: I also recommend grenade launchers over flamers. If you're in range for your flamer, you probably arent going to last much longer with that squad. Grenade launchers have a decent range, and can fire Krak or Frag rounds which is a very versitile option to have in a game.
I am the Aquila-Guerilla!
Well, first of all, I'ed remove the flamer from your army. Like Gnome said, your dead by the time their within range. If you REALLY want to have flamers into your army, make sure you either have it all or nothing, 1 flamer isnt going to do you good. But 3 flamers can burn down a squad of orks or tyranids, giving u (maybe) that 1 extra turn of shooting.
