Hey there everyone. I'm a SM noob, having assembled a fairly large Tyranid army in the last few years, I decided I wanted to try something different, and elected to try the Space Marines.
Last week I managed to get a sealed battleforce, Codex, sealed Command Squad and sealed Predator tank for £75 off a mate who didn't want them anymore since he was heading to university.
Anyway he's now managed to dig out a sealed Terminator box set and a sealed Dreadnought, and says I can have any one of them for £10 but the other he's giving his brother as a christmas present.
So basically my question is, which should I go for?
So far I have a Rhino, 5 man combat squad, 10 man tactical squad, 5 scouts, 5 assault marines, the command squad and a predator tank.
None of these are assembled so if you'd recommend which of the terminators or dreadnought to take, and how to assemble them to fit in with the other things I have, I'd greatly appreciate it.
I know I could probably figure this out on my own but i don't wanna be shelling out on the wrong models, or building them wrong and wishing I'd asked someone with more experience.
The type of play style I'm looking at using is generally close combat oriented with some ranged support. If it helps anyone, I know for sure that I'm gonna assemble the Predator with Twin linked lascannons, heavy bolter sponsons and a storm bolter.
Thanks in advance, and please don't flame me ... I am at the moment, only a Gaunt
It's a good headache to have - two good units to be offered!
I've always found Terminators to work best in a Land Raider, which isn't always feasible in a small army.
A Dreadnought assembled with an Assault Cannon and a Powerfist is quite a versitile unit - that'd probably be my choice.
As I say both are good choices, so it could be worth basing your choice on which you'd prefer to paint. Enjoy!
I'd never pass up the opportunity for terminators! I just prefer them to a dreadnought in all honesty as they are more versitile and, in my experience, last longer.
I suppose you could check retail prices and see which is the better deal (i'm too lazy).
If Google were a woman...I would so marry her.
Thanks guys.. I'm probably leaning more towards the Dreadnought at the moment simply because it's one of my favorite models in the whole 40k range. Do you think I have enough in my other infantry squads to sacrifice the squad of terminators for a single dreadnought?
I do plan on buying another tactical squad and a devastator squad at christmas but I could drop one of those to change for a terminator squad anyway, should I go for the Dreadnought.

Dreadnoughts have armour, thus they're easier to kill off with a lucky shot, while Terminators do not thus they are harder to kill. I prefer Dreadnoughts to Terminators in general for fluff reasons and general Iron Hands feel they give off. Plus Terminators are usually seen as power-game-y. Add in that I prefer to field less models and am a big fan of machines... yeah. But if you want the power-house of the two, go with a unit of Terminators.
Both will draw enemy fire.

The only Termies worth fielding are TH/SS Assault Terminators, they smash faces and are fairly cheap for it. That is, until you factor in the requisite Land Raider then the price balloons quickly.
Dreadies are cheaper and shooty, but they are also easier to pop. I like MM/HF Dreads (walk or Pod) and dual TLAC Dreads for cheap firepower and maybe something to tie problem units up in combat.

Terminator for these reasons:
They cost more points for a reason. They have a shooting attak with an assualt weapon that isn't bad (if not up to dreadnought standards). 7They have more attacks in combat, more wounds, an inv. sv. and can hurt many things.
Dreadnought because it has better shooting attacks, is S10 not S8 and is more versatile.
Personaly i'd go with the terminators cos i go for safety in numbrs (if the dred dies its ded, if a term dies u got left) but i can see the attraction in the dreds fluff and versatility. Your call.
Depends on your usual gaming enviroment really.
Ifs its mass Str5 or less spam then a dreadnought will do you better.
But where I play everybody can deal with armour 12, but generally can't deal with terminators well.
I don't recommend this model, rather I just want to throw the idea out there.. it's one of my favorite Dreadnought builds.
Dreadnought (125 Points)
+2x Twin-Linked Autocannons
It's not uber CC, but it's a very accurate, very versatile, and IMO very cheap model, and works well supporting a unit or two of Devies. If you can walk him into the right cover, your opponents will be hard pressed to remove him once they figure out how devastating he can be.
I've recently become a fan of this thing called Dubstep. And you should too.

This is a tough call.
Dreds are good in the right situation with the right loadout. However, with lots of armies using melta weapons they do tend to go 'POP' if hit by one. However, they do make good heavy gun platforms.
Shooty termies again have their place but one should not think of them as all that hard. They need to pick their fights. I've had games where they have crashed through armies with abandon and other times where they haven't got past one turn.
IMHO: I'd get the termies but don't glue the heavy weapon onto the little guy until you know which weapon works for you best. Assault Cannons used to rule but are not that great any more. Heavy Flamers and teh mighty Cyclone are far better. Again this choice depends on fight style.
