I picked up my DH codex recently, and I was wondering about something that I've never really though about before. Due to shrouding is it viable to take on a firing line army, such as guard, at their own game?
I figure if you move into a band between 21 and 24 inches from their firing line, the front line only has a 80% chance of being able to shoot at you (my maths may be wrong, but I think I've done it right) Obviously the units further back, generally the more dangerous ones from a shooting point of view such as heavy weapon squads, have a lower chance.
Is this enough of a reduction that you'll be able to out shoot them? You may even get lucky on the dice, the other guy will get fed up and try moving forwards, in which case they definatly waste a turn of shooting.
Has anyone tried this tactic or does it just not work at all?
Tried and thrown away tactic for me.
I shoot a lot with gk's, but counting on the shrouding will get you killed.
'Thou shalt not refer to the Adeptus Soritas as "Bolter Bitches" nor shalt thou go anywhere near our sisters during the time of the "Red Rage," lest thou wishes to be the first human to enter orbit without the aid of a shuttle.'
Is the percentage of shooting that won't make it not enough to tip the balance then?
How will you take on mechanized lists? S6 psycannons are expensive and unreliable at best against AV11 rhinos or AV12 chimeras. Your heavy options - dreads and land raiders - don't have shrouding and will get blown away by enemy fire (well, the LR's will fare much better at least). No, a shooty GK army is no longer viable in this age of mech. You need to have a balance of the two (shooting and cc)
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2
Well seeing as all GK units are pretty awsome in CC I would have thought a balance was kinda inevitable.
What jy2 said. You have to have guns to be able to outshoot an enemy. A bare handful of psycannons and maybe some lascannons -- via land raiders or dreads -- does not qualify. Not even close.
Trying to do this is just asking to get your butt handed to you on a plate.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.
