We have a local tournament starting in a few weeks, and I'm wading through armylists in my room, trying to find the perfect army. The main problem I'm facing seems to be what heavy weapons to use.
Like in most tournaments, there will be lots of marines playing, along with some other races in powerarmour (chaos, necrons...), and with that in mind lascannons and plasma weapons are high priority. But in too large amounts, it's both expensive and 'not-quite-as-good' against horde armies like tyranids and orks.
My army now have the following 'firebase', along with moving firesupport from dreads and predators:
- Devastators (4 missile launchers)
- 2 Dreads (twin lascannon, missile launcher and multimelta)
- Predator (twin lascannon, heavy bolters)
- Land raider (godhammers, twin heavy bolters)
I always use the devastator squad (beats everything ), but should I go for something else (less lascannons?) when building tournament armies. BTW the tournament is 1500 points.
If you've read this far, you've gotta have something important to say!
It might be me, but I think it might be a little vehicle heavy. A LR, a Predator and 2 Dreads comes to nearly a third of your points. I shouldn't talk though, as I hate vehicles anyway.
Personally, I use 2 Devastator Squads. Both have 2 Missile Launchers and 2 Plasma Cannons each. Effective I think.
my 2 devistator choices would be ...ummm...
2 missle launchers
2 missle launchers

I would have one squad mainly for well armoured enemies, made up of 2 lascannons and 2 missile launchers. The missile launchers could also use frag missiles against horde armies. The second would be for hordes, and would have 2 plasma cannons and 2 heavy bolters. The plasma cannons are also useful for well armoured foes. My 2 pence.
Ravenwing: list made, now just to buy all the stuff on it (why do bikes have to be so expensive?)
Also, even with GT lists they usually allow you the ability to have so many models to field or change out with the current ones. If the tournament you will be participating in will allow you to do that, just have a few guys with heavy bolters to swap out with those with Lascannons/tank hunting weapons in case you run up against a swarm army.
If not, I would drop the second dreadnought, and put in another Dev Squad with Two heavy bolters and two rocket launchers. (assuming you have enough points to fill that out from other areas)
"Can you put that in a memo and title it '***** I already know!'"
Church: "Ok, so we're agreed? You first!"
Sarge: "Get on with it, Griff."
Griff: "I'd just like everyone to know: that I suck."
Griff: "And that I'm a girl..."
Church: "What else?"
Griff: "And I like ribbons in my hair, and I want to kiss all the boys."
Sarge: "This has to be the best surrender of all time."
Get rid of the land raider to many points, also make 1 squad full of lascannons, and another with heavy bolters, then give all your tac squads Missile launchers.
O & G: 5/0/1
Cheese! is right. Missiles and Lascannons/Plasma cannons make a poor combo, you waste your missiles against 2+sv opponents like termys. Plasma cannons are poor against vehicles. I'd put HBs or MLs in tactical squads and Lascannons or Plasma cannons in Devestator squads.
Either give your preadator 2 HBs, autocannon and a PMSB or 4 lacannons, or you will be wasting half your guns. Drop the land raider, they are useless, not enough firepower for 250 points.
1. I prefer 'one-weapon' devastator squads, especially if it's missile launchers (you multiply the hit with 4).
2. Lascannons are VERY expensive in devastator squads, so I NEVER use more than 2. Plus there's no good 'addition' to that unit. That unit IS tankhunting!
3. I'm not dropping the land raider, because it's just painted and I want to try it. I know I lose alot by doing so, but that's the way it's gonna be.
The big question is - what weapons to use beside the land raider and devastator unit with 4 missile launchers.
4. Someone said I'm using too many vehicles. It's kinda vehicle based (never tried it before), and I use two rhinos also. ^_^
BTW I'm playing salamanders.
The Landraider is a bitchin' model, and playing with cool models is what the game is all about. Besides, it's not 250 points because it sucks... It can move and fire all its weapons (and can choose to fire at a separate target using on of the Lascannon sponsons). Troops can assault straight out the front. And I've spent 6 turns before trying to penetrate an armor 14 without success. Besides, if I get a Shaken or Stunned result, it just keeps comming (and shooting!.
SO--If you want to use the Land Raider, it's not a bad choice at all. Just don't rely on it.
If you have the Land Raider, I wouldn't use the Predator.
I think 1 Dread is enough, but two will offer more of a chance of getting one into Close Combat, where Dreads belong. Drop the missile launchers, use the power fists, and take potshots with your lascannons while you're charging toward the nearest enemy infantry!
My favorite Dev squad combo is the Las, Plas, 2xMissile combo. If I were using 2 Dev squads, I'd break it out differently (but I never do, because I like to spend my points elsewhere).
Here's what it does for you: AP2-- other than terminators, there's not much else to worry about. Terminator squads are small, so a Plas template and a lascannon blast is enough to send them packing after a turn or two of shooting. AP3-- crack missiles, las blast and plasma blast will put a hurtin' on any power armored squad. AP4 or higher-- Plasma first, then Frag templates, then the lascannon shot to pick off the lone survivor (which is that character model he was trying to save--instant kill). Against vehicles you've got 3 S8 or higher shots. Against big nasties, even the S7 can cause a wound better than 50% of the time.
If you have a vehicle heavy army, I'd use attack bikes and landspeeders as a good compliment. Heavy bolters are great in threes. Multi-meltas belong on speeders, as do assault cannons (now that they will get rending, they're even a threat to heavier vehicles!.
TANGENT: Imagine re-rolling 3 dice for a twin-linked assault cannon to try to get 6's. Baal Predators and LR Crusaders may just be anti-tank options, now! S6(+6+d6). Not bad!
