Whoa, I'm forgetting my responsibilities! Yesterday I should have introduced a new topic of the week. Sorry for being late. This week's topic was requested by Mr. Biscuits: the vindicator.
Decent front armor but vulnerable on the sides. Very strong weaponry but short-ranged. In short: not quite the siege tank it promises to be, but a very potent and fear-inducing killing machine nonetheless. A welcome and point-efficient heavy support choice.
Do you like it, do you use it, does it do well for you?? Do you rush forward and crush as much as you can before the tank is obliterated, or do you use it defensively, sitting behind cover taking pot-shots? How many do you use and what is the best way to equip them? Discuss.
I haven't used them much myself, but the idea way to run them seems to be to keep them behind buildings and in cover and let the enemies come to you. I've done that a couple times and they've survived, so long as the enemy didn't make a concerted effort to bring them down.
However, somthing I'd like to do with Space Wolves would be to take a Vindicator, flank it with two rhinos, and march it across the field stopping to fire once you have good targets. For good measure, stick a Rune Priest in one of the Rhinos and use Storm Caller to give Rhinos a 5+ cover save. My friend has done basically the same thing with a battlewagon and two trukks and a bigmek. Very tough to crack.
Remember that it can move 6" and then fire so it has fairly decent range.
I find that it is one of the most fear inducing models I can play as it can kill anything. This can be exploited in a few ways:
a). Put it at the front of you army with things either side of it. Blast everything in site,
Pros- gets good shots, makes the enemy think twice about approaching you.
Cons- vulnerable, easy to see and shoot.
b). Mix it in with your army and make it seem insignificant. And then make your opponent realize how they've underestimated it.
Pros- it doesn't become a target as much
Cons- there aren't many but I guess its range could be one
c). play it defensively, make them struggle and waste time and models trying to attack it. This is more a supportive role.
Pros- allows your army to get killed less and distracts enemies from your other vechiles
Cons- range, LoS, your armies in the way, still vulnerable to outflank and sometimes infiltrate.
Personally I use it in tactic a or b but c can work. For 115 points it is a steal and almost always make its points back (unless your enemy knows that and deffkopters it 1st turn...) and I would advise always having at least one in your army as iut fits the role of supporting the front line (or trenches in a seige) perfectly and allows your army to break an enemy line and then surge into it (as in the white scars and ravenguard battle against chaos in the codex, I think).
They are always handy for tough targets and to be frank you cannot resist the opportunty to blow up tough units, mine is not fussy it chews most stuff up but i do like it when you blow up a landraider in one shot... overall though they are a decent unit i am considering taking two in a 2k SW army for close up brutality- the space wolf way
I usually run 3 of them - it makes for a whole lot of threat that's good for most targets.
I play BT, and I haven't played a game with them yet, as we play smaller points games. I would use them in my army in higher points games, as I have a lack of anti-tank and monster weapons.
The Vindicator isn't much use against monstrous creatures since it'll never do more than one wound per turn and can't cause instant death to any MC in 40k. It is a worthy antitank unit, however, and is ideal for those pesky Land Raiders that don't have the option of keeping away from it.I would use them in my army in higher points games, as I have a lack of anti-tank and monster weapons.

Vindicators are one of the best heavies in the SM-dex IMO.
Not to costy, pretty good range 24 + 6, and good S/AP with big blast.
Good against vec, meq, hords and almost everything. And big "scary" factor.
I love my vindictator, i cannot fault it at all. i usaully pair mine with a terminator squad and a tatical squad and a hq usally my intergator chaplin. its a pretty good combo to be honest.
i like the fact the cannon can take out quite alot of infantry in a short space of time, when i played my first game against nids it managed to take out a full squad of termigaunts and almost a full warrior squad, one survided the blast lol.
it quickly got mowed down my my terminator squad thou. they are worth the points i cannot fault them at all and i think they are a wise choice for any space marine commander.
