OK, so here's my problem.
I'm playing the new Tyranids on Saturday, and don't know what to take to beat them. This is what he took last time:
We played Annihilation, but I got well and truly stuffed - 8-1!!
Here's the problem: He sends his Gaunts and Stealers up for CC, but keeps the heavier things at the back. Which means I need an army which can deal with lots of gribblies, and take out the heavies.
I'm thinking an Ironclad in a Drop Pod, Deep-Striking 10-strong Terminators and an Assault Squad to back them up taking out the heavies, and Devastators, Vindicator and LOTS of Taccies (like, 30). This will probably run me dry on points, but I hope it is effective.
What do you do against Nidzilla?
Space Marines: 4,000pts - 7/7/2
Imperial Guard: Under Construction...
Personally? I'd roll 3 vindicators, sternguard with heavy flamers, and some tactical marines Maybe get some sniper scouts or combat scouts in there, and definitely get a powerfist on every Sergent. Tactical squad weapons should probably be flamers/plasmaguns, and missile launchers/plasma cannons. Your first turn will be all about dropping blast templates across his swarms to clear them out of your way, and beyond that you can play it by ear depending the setup/objectives.
Things I'd run:
Sternguard, sternguard, sternguard. Wound on 2+, anti MC; ignore cover or longer range and ap4, anti-horde.
Vindicators = kaboom, big hole in hordes and can harm MCs, though but can only do one wound so mainly on the hordes.
Terminators maybe, but instead of deep striking I'd use them as counter assualt unit, same with assualt squad
Dreadnought okay but will only be a distraction so I'd go normal one to save points.
Lots of taccies= good
Devestators a bit iffy, i'd prefer a vindicator personally.
Lanspeeders with either heavy flamer(+multi-melta) as a suicide unit or lanspeeder with typhoon missile launcher and heavy bolter for more firepower.
Watch out for outflankers, weird movement/deployment and deep-strikers (especially drop po... Spores)

An Ironclad dread would be great to assault and tie up gaunts and genestealers. The gaunts can't touch it and the genestealers can only scratch it if they roll double 6's, (roll a 6 to rend, then roll 5 or 6 on the extra strength from the attack...ok not double 6's, but close). PLUS the double heavy flamer from an Ironclad would be ACES against those hordes...
I agree with the sternguard using hellfire rounds, get as many pie plates coming down as possible. Consider the much-maligned Thunderfire Cannon if he is weak on shooting...a bonus on that is the techmarine gets a free flamer too...but a single round of shooting with the Thunderfire cannon dropping 4 small blast templates will probably kill more than it's points. It can also put them in difficult terrain and slow them down (BONUS!).
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
The main way and cheapest is to grab 10 sniper scouts.
Space marines 6 dread army Wins: 4 ties:2 Loses:7 Modified Standard nilla marines Wins:37 Ties:8 Loses 42 Daemonhunters Wins:3 Ties:0 Loses:1 Full assualt concept army wins: 6 Ties: none Loses: 2
Melta guns are always the answer. With those ridiculous Zoanthropes, Mawlocs, and the raper of Mon tsula or whatever he is called, you need Melta guns to instant death those t4 units, and nothing says I'm going to put a wound on your Mawloc like a melta gun.

The real, real issue in the Tyranid army is Genestealers. Gaunts really don't cause much trouble and are there just to distract you. Focus you attention on what counts, Genestealers and close combat MCs.
Genestealers will annihilate anything they touch, period. They are the real threat, along with flying Hive Tyrants.
Since 5th edition provides cover saves for almost everything, I rank target priority as follows:
1 – Genestealers
2 – Flying MC
3 – Warriors
4 - Everything else
Threat level is also determined by the brood number. A brood of 6 Genestealers poses some threat, but 10 with a Broodlord upgrade, infiltrating 18 inches from you is an imminent threat that needs urgent attention.
Flamers work very well, but you’ll need to make sure your squad has enough fire power to thin the brood, and then charge. That’s another point here: You should make sure you denied them the charge at all costs when engaging them. Don’t hesitate, engage and charge.
Templates in general work well. Vindicators, Wirlwinds, Thunderfire Cannons, heck, even Devastators with ML or PC should work.
Also, Tyranids struggle with AV14. A LR/LRC/LRR can work wonders, if you have the points (just make sure you take care of the Zoanthropes first)
ML or PC devastators would work wonders, the high strength and low AP can take out monsterous creatures and thay use blasts which will destroy hordes, missile launchers can also wreck any warriors your opponent brings.
An allied DH inquisitor lord with a psychic hood and two mystics would be a great addition. A LD10 infinate range psychic hood, plus the mystics allow you to hav a nearby unit fire at enemy deep strikers.
GKTerminators would be a nice addition to amarine list. Their high strength power weapons will help eliminate monsterous creatures and they come with stormbolters to help thin the horde.
Other useful units hav alread mentioned so I won't repeat them

I recently played my nids against a Vulcan list, and I had problems with Vulcan+7 assault terminators in a Land Raider Crusader.
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2
You mainly want to avoid your heavy weapons (which are there to kill MCs) getting swamped by Gaunts or Genestealers. So put them somewhere elevated, and then stick other things in their way; preferably tanks, but tactical squads work fine. You want to kill the Genestealers, the Tyrant and the Carnifexes first, in that order.
You should definitely look into TH/SS terminators and a HQ with eternal warrior, like Lysander. Vulkan is a great complement against Tyranids, since he master-crafts your thunder hammers and flamers and rocks a 3+ invie, a relic blade and a heavy flamer. Also, don't deep strike the assault squad. It's generally a bad plan.
If it's annihilate, don't use Combat Squads, don't spread out and try to protect any transports you have since they count for points. That's general advice but it's very relevant since you got so badly thrashed in annihilate.
