I am thinking of making a Japanese ww2 style catachan army.
please give me ideas on the ww2 Japanese. What units would be fluffy

Bouyeah, don't get a chance to pull out my historian hat often. Now lets see:
The Japanese army had two major tactics bepending on what phase of the war you want to represent. The early phase of the war had the Banzai charge as the primary tactic (not a great idea). To represent this, basically go with rushing conscript platoons support by heavy weapons, artillery and snipers. While fluffy, I seriously doubt the effectiveness of such a list. Since charging headlong at the enemy screaming Banzai while trying to stab them only works so-so, the Japanese then devised the multi-layered defense as a better idea. Basing myself on the battle of Okinawa, fluffy troop choices tend to be artillery rather than tanks, satchel charges as anti-tank, plenty of snipers and heavy weapons. Infiltrating veterans are also very fluffy as the Japanese would regularly send troops to attack the American positions during the night. Essentially, a fluffy WWII Japanese army will be fairly troop intensive with very few vehicles. Marbo or vets with demolition charges are incredibly fluffy as are "ratlings."
Generally the majority of your troops will stay back in cover and fire everything they've got while snipers and infiltrated vets pick off elites and tanks. Major downside of a fluffy Japanese army is that you have literally no anti-tank except artillery and demolition charges/melta-bombs.

Glad I could be of help. I found it funny that this post came up right when I finished reading two seperate accounts of the battle for Okinawa. Anyway, best of luck with the army and be sure to post pics.

I am going to make the americans and get squadrons of valkaries with stormtroopers droping out the back
Take penal legion troops as they get stubborn and a random rule that can represent the japanese banzai attacks. Throw in straken and a CCS + standard with a big red dot on it and you are clear to go.
Don't forget to have commisars with katanas. Im sure some companies will make 28mm metal japanese style swords. If you visit perry-miniatures.com and have a look at their samurai range they sell sashimono back banners and naginata polearms in packs of 24.

The Japanese used late WW1 style infantry tactics with assault squads and infiltration combined with artillery. They also backed it up with their powerful air force and navy. The late war Banzai charges were not really military doctrine, more the futile actions of a beaten power.
I would use an infantry force with infiltration doctrines, sniper teams and a block of basic line inf with maybe a commissar lord for HQ (brutal leadership).
Then add some artillery and a MoO to represent a forward observer calling in air and naval artillery strikes to support the basic infantry force. A valkyrie painted in Imperial colours would look awesome but their abilities don't really represent anything in WW2.
