Hey everyone, I was wondering how everybody likes to use their Wolf Guard units? They are arguably the most versatile unit in 40k. I know termies are a popular choice, but does anyone use them as assault or biker squads? if so can anyone justify the points cost to me? Thanks!
The only time I use Wolf Guard is in an assault squad. Five Wolf Guard with an HQ. That HQ is either Ragnar or a Wolf Lord in runic armor, power weapon, storm shield, and Saga of the warrior born. The Wolf Guard are generally using 2-3 Power Weapons, and have a storm shield (just in case The squad gets hit by a Lascannon and I don't want to risk losing Ragnar or my Lord) The squad also rides comfortably in a Razorback. This squad is just under 200 points (with the razorback) and is good at assaulting anything, and only gets better with Ragnar.

Problem is, jump packs and bikes for wolf gurad are hideously overpriced. They have the same costs for WG as they do for HQ's, and that makes running a decent unit of them WAYYY over the top. By comparison Vanguard, whom everyone thinks are junk, get jump packs for 10 points a model(less than half of what WG pay for them).
Nevermore Chapter: 6200 pts; 97/49/11; Longest Streak: 9 Wins/4 Losses; Nearing Completion
Yeah that's what i was thinking. I think that five WG on bikes with storm shields and p.wpns can be worth it though, having close combat weapons, 3+ invul saves, toughness (5) and bolters, with 15 attacks on the charge that ignore armour. I guess it depends on what you're facing though. Any thoughts? By the way I don't know, am I allowed to write the total pts cost of the unit here?
SW have a much better option than WG on bike and it is called Thunderwolves Calvary.
WG with JP are also not cost efficient. Just pick aSky Claws squad, attach a Wolf Priest with JP and you should be fine, with the minor drawback of losing multiple PW.
actually you would lose multiple pw and be ws 3, and while having 2 hand weapons, will have 3 attacks in rounds of combat after the first rather than 2. As far as the thunderwolves go, I just don't have the resources to convert the models necessary to play a list WYSIWYG. Besides WG biker and assault units would just look really cool if converted well
That's why Sky Claws need a Wolf Priest. The preferred enemy will allow you to re-reroll your hit misses, so WS 3 isn't that bad. And they are a lot more cost effective, can go all the way to a 15 men squad and do the job even without the power weapons.
Bikers are ok, but after playing Ravenwing for so long and then a SM Bike army, I learned that I don't like my bikes in CC. They just are too expensive for this role.

I like my WG plain and simple - with a Pfist and combi-melta and leading my Grey Hunters. They become too much of a point sink when used as a unit by itself. They need to supplement the scoring units to make them better.
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2
yeah but one of the main reasons i started space wolves was for the fluffiness and i can't pass up an elite unit made of of different types of highskilled warriors. I usually take squads of 7, one in termie armor to lead a pack of long fangs, and one to lead my pack of blood claws, with the other five as a squad. Also, if I have any stand out models of any level, they may get promoted to my battle leader's WG bodyguard . So far though, I've only tried using them on foot, usually in a drop pod (them being from Ragnar's company, I thought drop podding was appropriate)
