I just recently started playing 40k and have found myself thoroughly addicted.
I've already read through several of the topics posted to get a better idea of where i should be going with my army list
(The guardsman's uplifting magazine has been an amazing help!) but i wanted to sort of introduce myself, and maybe get some good general advice for where to start.
That being said i realize the shear number of options at my disposal and i definitely understand it's going to be a matter of play-style and opinion as to what the better choice is. so i figure i'll just put forth what i currently have and where I'm thinking of going (at least to a certain extent)
I have about an 1100 pt. army right now:
1 CCS: have a master of ordinance, commander has bolt pistol and power sword, going to outfit with 4 plasmas later instead of the standard bearer and the other fluff.
2 Platoons: the PCS (after reading through some of the previous threads) is going to be outfitted with 4 spec weapons, most likely 3 flamers and a melta, that or 4 flamers (currently i have the whole vox, med, standard bearer setup in each PCS)
Two squads in each with an autocannon in each squad with the exception of one with a heavy bolter, (and I'm currently switching them around to have GLs in them for Spec. wep.)
One HW squad with 3 Lascannons
One sentinel with Hunter-killer and Autocannon (is the hunter-killer worth more than just looking cool?)
It's a pretty modest force i know, but then again i am just starting out and it's probably good i didn't just go blow a paycheck before i got y'alls advice anyway.
I'm thinking my army will be mostly foot-sloggers and some armored support (after reading about the demolishers I'm thinking that's where i would go with it) probably eventually get another two sentinels to fill out that squad, and keep em with autocannons (I'm thinking running them as armored, if you have a preference for scout sentinels then please let me know!)
i'd also like to have a couple of vet squads and some conscripts later, definitely going to get a commissar at one point.
and most likely have each platoon specialize instead of being even, one being more anti-infantry and the other, anti-heavy.
i think this post is long enough so I'll just stop here! haha
thanks for your advice and please catch me if i do any annoying "forum newbie" stuff
For the Emperor
Welcome to 40k, and you've made an excellent choice with the Imperial Guard.
The Space marines would have you think they're the real deal, but without us, well, the galaxy would fall apart. They just swoop on in and steal all the glory!
To go over what you've got, if you're just playing friendly, new games, it's very similar to what I took when I first started playing. Its really fun, but as time progresses, you'll probably narrow your list down some.
First, medics...not really worth it. They cost too much, and with such a large amount of Strength 6 weaponry (which will cause instant death on your T3 models), it serves very little purpose. I used to love kiting out all my dudes with all the gear I could afford, but after playing many matches since, I've determined a far better use of the points is to simply...add more troops.
Let's break down what you've mentioned (most of it is on the money).
Your Company Command Squad: nothing wrong with the master of ordinance, but he really requires orders (Bring it down) to make his artillery bombardment the least bit accurate. Even then, it's not that fantastic (as nice as the S9Ap3 attack looks). In addition, the powersword is probably not worth it, the bolt pistol is fine if you've got spare points floating around. If I equip my commander with anything, it's a power fist (and only rarely at that, the CCS shouldn't really ever get in assault)
Your Platoon Command Squads, you're on the money if you take 4 Flamers. No need to mix and match weapons here. If you give someone a weapon, give everyone eligible the same weapon. 4 Flamers, 4 Meltas, etc...
Like I mentioned above, drop the medics. Voxes, run a bit and you'll see if you really need them. They *can* increase your chance of getting success on the orders, but honestly, it's points better spent elsewhere. Standard bearer: Again, not worth it. Take all the points on extra gear that you're using, and just buy another infantry squad somewhere. They'll do you much better.
In your infantry squads, good, though either give them all auto cannons, or all heavy bolters. Saturate the field with as much focused fire as you can. Auto cannons are for versatility: They'll rip through AV12 better than any other weapon you can give them (including Las cannons), work great against monstrous creatures, and do OK versus infantry. Heavy Bolters are amazing for tearing through infantry, and in a pinch can work against Monstrous Creatures.
Grenade launchers, good choice. More high strength goodness. Can't ever go wrong here.
Drop the heavy weapon squads. They're tempting, but never really worth it (except for maybe mortar saturation). Take the points you've saved up thus far dropping extra wargear and buy 2 Veteran squads, give them three meltaguns each, they'll give you more troop choices (good thing), more high strength guns (also a good thing), better chance of killing armour than las cannons (also a good thing), and more models on the field (always a good thing). Don't forget, they're also BS4. Try giving these two squads a Chimera each.
Sentinels, I've recently fallen in love with. Armoured or Scout, either works very well with Autocannons equipped, but their roles change drastically depending on what they are. If they're scouts, they should be doing just that: Take advantage of their special rules, outflank, go through terrain and cover where vehicles will have a hard time getting at them easily. Nail tanks with side and rear armour shots.
Armoured Sentinels should probably sit on your mid/back field, directing firepower where its needed. If you bring Russes, the Sentinels will be left mostly untouched, and this is their strength: a squad of 3 Armoured Sentinels directing 3 Autocannons downrage is a scary, scary sight for any APC, or light tank to behold. Eldar players will -hate- that squad. Worst comes to worst, use them to assault a unit. With AV12 front armour, they'll tie them up for a good long time (remember, walkers only get hit on front armour in melee combat. How many infantry models do you know with S6 or higher? Not many. Even grenades make this prospect a lot more appealing. Powerfists can hurt, but it's still a 50/50).
Don't assault with Scout walkers. AV10 with open topped = pain.
To answer your question on Hunter Killers, generally, no, BUT, I have seen a squad of scout sentinels outflanking use hunter killers to great effect (6 S7 shots, and 3 S8 shots can put the hurt on any tank), but it's a pricey pill to swallow (30 points for the whole squad, thats almost half a veteran squad!)
Demolishers are a great choice to add to your army. I've got two that I do run on a regular basis. Take a peak at the Entry for Vendettas, as well. Vendettas are our "cheap" unit. Three twin linked las cannons on a fast AV12 skimmer that can carry troops, outflank, and deep strike. They're our bread and butter. I usually run 2 in tandem with my Demolishers, and it allows my infantry platoons to focus on anti Transport and Anti-Infantry, while my demolishers and vendettas kill all the tanks (and yes, two demolishers and two vendettas WILL kill all enemy armour).
But...with that said, I do NOT recommend running vendettas to begin with, especially if your friends are new to the game: Vendettas are drenched in cheese. Oddly enough, the army that can counter them best is the army you're playing (autocannons chew Vendettas to pieces)
Anyhow, hope I made some sense, but take what I say with a grain of salt, wait for other responses, and get a good overall idea on what you want to do.
Ultimately, it's your decision, and it's all about having fun. DEFINITELY not always about winning!
awesome advice!! thanks a ton!! i can't wait to get these guys mobilized in full force!
Well i think cKerensky said pretty much every thing that is needed. Welcome to the Guard, the best army the galaxy has ever and will ever see.
If you get the time, write up an army list and whack it up in the army list section. Myself or any of the other layabouts will give you some tips and pointers on your budding force.
Absolutely! great info, i'm going to try and get everything organized and i'll be sure to post! thanks again for the welcome, and the info!
Welcome to the guard! I'm glad the magazines are proving useful, there'll be a new one up later, I need a quick read of the codex first though for inspiration.
Thanks! and they really were! what's the next issue on? or do i have to wait to find out?
You'll have to wait to find out...
(And so will I, I haven't thought of something yet, but it really needs updating with a new episode. Any ideas?)
Well, maybe a discussion about artillery? or special characters that people like? read a lot about Pask and Marbo that was helpful but not much about any of the other characters (might be a reason for that) was wondering about creed and kell if anyone actually uses them, or maybe for different episodes something about interesting tactics that work particularly well against the different enemies of the imperium.
just some thoughts, if i come up with anything better i'll PM you!
I've been thinking about Creed and Kell for a while but can't come up with a good fluff piece for the. I do want to do a focus on the special characters eventually but as individuals, I'll try and spread them out a bit. Creed Kell will be next up I think but today's will remain a bit of a mystery...
