What is the most effective way for a space marine army to take out Necrons? I have endless trouble when I go against them and I'm new so I don't really know why. I run a bike heavy unit with Kahn as an HQ.
Power weapons/fists, and S8 or higher are your weapons of choice. I usually mix 2 or 3 vindicators in with my bike lists, and their S10 AP2 large blasts ignore the armour save and the WBB save, and still do ok against the monoliths.
Really, just stack your lists with stuff that ignores their armour and WBB, and then focus everything on the warriors. If you can phase them out, then they'll loose no matter what the objectives are.
Yup, termies are a good answer. Or command squads with power weapons. Something that can take out like 10 necrons wiht power weapon at a shot.
As a Necron player: anything assaulty. Take down 1 more model than they can take down of your unit, and bam, you'll sweep warriors. Honestly, a lot of the players I've fought didn't focus on Phase Out and instead on my attack force (usually Destroyers) and they have always lost or drawn.
Also, FOCUS fire! I field 10 destroyers, they're a big threat fire everything at them if you plan to kill em. Plan to DENY WBB by destroying them all. 1 surviving like model can ruin your day.

Now, I know they aren't 100% effective as WBB saves can still be taken against plama cannon wounds by most things in a necron army but they can always be used to help thin down an opponents unit in order to prevent WBB from lack of a unit You never know how satisfying this can be until you put a nice plasma cannon shot dead centre in a unit of scarab swarms and istant-kill the whole thing. Other than that my dreadnaughts have a feild day when facing 'Crons. I drop pod 5 1st turn 3 can't move on my next turn after being glanced a rediculas amount of times, but the other two will proceed to charge a unit of warriors or something and run the nit down or force them to flee off the board if I can't catch them, odds are I'll still be within 6 inches
Ask me about the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White Bike!!!
Another necron player here.
SWEEP 'EM!!! Do not be put off by how scary the warriors look with their blank faces and big green guns. You can practically win the CC, sweeping them with a single power weapon (provided there isn't a ResOrb in the area).
I tell people this a lot. It makes a lot more sense to spam weapons that deny saves rather than insta-death. Why? Because a 'cron player worth his salt will have several, if not all, warrior squads in a phalanx with ResOrb protection. If they are isolated, wiping out the entire unit is much more productive than taking pot shots at multiple units, only to see the downed returneth. Also, it pays to force a LOT of WBB because then you're likely to ensure more definite kills.
If you spam vindicators, watch out for destroyers. They have a very good chance of glancing it enough to ruin the big cannon on the front and that's pretty much one tank written off (before it can do anything).

Skaven still being assembled
What does a Res Orb have to do with sweeping advance?
Yeah, I think a lot people, including myself, think of them as fearless. But they're nothing of the sort.
Wanna bet they get stubborn next codex?
