i haven't really used any of the special characters in the space wolves codex. so id like to ask my other fellow space wolves players what characters do you use if at all any? what are the good and bad, experiences with them, and do any work well in a competitive list?
Space Wolf characters are pretty expensive. I wouldn't recommend you use them in anything less than 1750pts. They have some pretty nice generic HQ choices anyways. At 1850 and higher, my HQ of choice is Ragnar Blackmane backed by 1-2 Rune Priests. Ragnar is a beast in combat and makes the SW from a decent assault army into a great one.
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2
Indeed. A lot of the time Space Wolf Wolf Lords can stand up to most races special characters anyway so you need not worry to much, especially with Saga of the Bear.
Basically life sucks, there is only war and you're probably gonna get eaten by Tyranids, have fun.
The only ones I use regularly are Logan and Canis.
Logan give ==Me== WG as Troops so I can build a "Loganwing" featuring cheap Troops sporting a cyclone and chainfist in every squad. Lone Wolves and TWC give it some reach and bite and we're set.
Canis makes Fenrisian Wolves Troops and awesome(r). I love him in ==My== TWC list.
A normal Wolf Lord can do all sorts of horrible things on his own. If I don't use Canis I'll take him. Thunderwolf Mount, Wolf Claw, Storm Shield, Wolf Tail Talisman, Saga of the Warrior Born. Murder machine to end all. Swap the WC for a TH and add Saga of the Bear and he's a big game hunter. With base T5, a Storm Shield and some times EW he's practically unkillable.
WGBLs get an honrable mention. They don't have all the tricks a Wolf Lord does, but outflanking them on a Thunderwolf mount is most amusing.
As for the rest...
Njal-Best psychic defense, awesome abilities, and all the Wolf psychic powers rock. I don't use him because I'm already shelling out for Logan, Canis or a Wolf Lord, but he's great.
Bjorn-Handy if you want to go first a lot, very tough and makes a free objective when he pops. You have to build around his abilities.
Ragnar-Super killy, but no EW hurts. Need a lot to make the most of him (Land Raider + WG + support = eggs in a basket)
Arjack-Fun, but crazy expensive.
Ulrik-Like other Wolf Priests, just not all that useful.

while im here i might as well give my two sense on the special characters
Logan - CC monster if you ask me although a little to much points for the size games i play.
Njal - i like how he has all the psychic powers and what not, personally i dont like many of the normal powers and his way of determining the powers is a bit to random for me.
Ragnar - love everything about this model except the actual model itself(not a fan of the old gw models)
Ulrik - cheap points, gives reroll Ld tests to any that has los which could prove useful
Canis - could really tear up a squad but my thinking is the bigger models die first. i would most likely use him alot but he has a big price tag
Bjorn - probably my favorite of them all. has options, a nice statline for CC and shooting and is pretty tough with the 5+ save, 13 Front, and venerable rule(if only he could take a drop pod...)
Remember, it's not just the individual model's stats and weapons that make it worthwhile, it's also what they can do for your army. Logan and Canis change up the FoC, Njal offers psychic defense without parallel, Bjorn helps ensure you go first, and so on.
Derp, I mis-spoke (typed?) They're Troops, but never scoring. I certainly wish they were, but they're still pretty awesome anyway.
