Just bought the Venerable dread, and will use it with assault cannon or multi-melta. However, I did get a plasma cannon and is now wondering if its any good for a dread.
First up, its a low cost upgrade - matching that of the assault cannon.
Secondly, it looses fair anti-vehicle (both when compared to MM and AC).
It may kill more MEQs or TEQs, if they stand close together, and it has superior range, allowing it to dish out damage from first turn. It is also stronger than the AC, but against MC, rending is king.
Just for good measure, ill mention the lascannon. Compared to that beast, the PC is cheap, and it will kill as many M/T EQs. I don't "have" to buy a missile launcher for the dread. So the roles of the PCDr vs the TLLCDr are different.
My question is: Is it worth it?
I love the plasma cannon, both look and fluff, but compared to the AC, there are some losses.
Are there anyone using the PCDr, or tried it - and failed.
Your call really. Personally I drop 2 MultiMelta dreads and those are great. With Vulcan all meltas are twin linked! Drop it on their line and POP, 2d6 pen. Plasma is fine, but just the scatter thing is 'fair'. If you're doing a shooty dread I do Las/Missile and leave it at that (although a predator is not much more for for 3 las's but can't move and shoot all like a dread).
I field 2 MM and one las/missile myself in 3 drop pods (but drop the las/missile one empty and walk that one on the table. Let's me drop both MM's first turn). I don't like plasma's myself. If I wanted S7 I'd do dual autocannons.

Your assessment of the PC for the dread is a little different than mine. If you are targeting just MEQ's then I like the AC hit to kill ratio. However on Term equivs or 2+ Sv, the PC does a much better job. The AP 2 v. Rending is nearly identical, without having to roll those 6s. They both ignore FNP, and the STR advantage of the PC v. higher T models will be more of an advantage (ie MCs) Another key factor is the range on the AC v. the PC. The PC shoots much further and more closely compliments the free ML on the dread.
If you're going to try to mix it up in CC, then sure take that AC, on the way, as you mentioned you can always target those light vehicles.
With a venerable I'd nearly always go Plas. The chances of missing are actually pretty slim. Remember that Ven Dreds have a BS5. That means a 2 in 6 chance of a 'hit' and all deviations of 5" or less are ignored and the most it can deviate is 7" if you are real unlucky. It can have a good go at light vehicles and flatten any infantry with high armour saves. Well worth it. Coupled with another, relevant shooty weapon you have a great anti infantry or anti armour platform. Other dreds do CC better.
If I'm not running a MM I almost always use the PC. It's well worth it versus MEQ/TEQ armies.
