Hello everyone. I am considering running a Black Dragons Space Marine army (never tried to run any marine army before) and am thinking of attempting to use their rules found in theChapter Approved The Cursed Founding (2004). At my local gaming store after talking with the owner/tournament runner he told me it would be okay for me to do this for a tournament held there and to play there. The special rules for the Black Dragons Space Marines are:
-Cursed founding "ill fated": There is a rule with all cursed founding chapters that states they do not have the and they shall no fear rule which would be a negative to my list.
-Ossific Blades: Bone blades that grow out of both the forearms and elbows and that have also been known to be seen as crests protruding from the forehead. Count all 6's to hit as an automatic wound with no chance at an armor save (aka Rending)
I was wondering is there or will there be any space marine unit that comes already with the Black Dragons special rule of rending when rolling 6's to hit? I only ask because i think this would be an awsome chapter to run and wanted to know if anyone knew if the regular space marine codex or the special marine codexs like space wolves, blood angels, black templars, ect. Have that rule for any of their assault marine units. Thanks.
I still have that article lying around somewhere and I remember there being more to it (limited options, unique psychic powers, points costs associated with said rending and then only on units of Abominations or Assault Squads).
As is, giving up ATSKNF for free old rending (it happens on the to wound rolls now) is ludicrous. If your local TO decided that would be ok, he needs his head examined. Crazy OP.
If you want to go the normal route, SM, CSM, SW and BA can all work it. SM have tons of variety and using special characters you can make your marines as wacky as all get out. Shrike lets everybody fleet (good for dudes with swords for arms) and likes his super duper stabby claws (said arm-swords). Khan turns your entire army into Tactical Geniuses (HURR!!) in exchange for being reliable and, y'know, good. CSM has no ATSKNF and everybody carts around bolters, pistols and ccw (more attacks to rep their super elbows), but it makes up for it by sucking something fierce (overpriced everything, no ATSKNF, trash units, limited long range firepower). SW have pointy bits all over and easy ways to represent mutation-addled freaky dinks (Blood Claws), but they kinda fail (hey, maybe they mutated into giant wolf like blade monsters, now that would be cool). Blood Angels are right around the corner with jump pack and assault troops galore, FNP and Furious Charge passed out like candy (super dense skellingtons ala Wolverine and being really angry/scary because of the aforementioned pointed bits sticking out of your arms respectively), and other funky stuff.
House ruling or adapting outdated rules never ends well, due in part or totality to fanboyism (of course their Scouts can hogtie Defilers, did you see the giant freakin' spikes growing out of their arms?), poor meshing of previous rules (WTF is overwatch? How many points is a virus grenade?), poor understanding of game balance (10s across the board for 4 points a model? Seems fine to me), people not being in the know (I made these special rules myself, but don't worry, they're legit, no you can't see them), or just being convoluted and stupid (this special rule specifies that the owner of the model, that being the individual who currently commands them on the battlefield, will be endowed to save his special super thingy for every 3rd Wednesday in spring, but not leap years to destroy every model on the board and punch his opponent in the neck).
tl;dr. Don't do it, use established rules, and I don't need to put a snarky comment in parenthesis [or brackets] after every sentence (shut up, it's cool).
Maybe i should have been more clear on this. The Ossific Blades can be only taken by a special unit known as "Dragon Claws" aka only the assault marines of my army could take them. Also they are not free points as they are worth +5 points a model that wants to take the Ossific Blades. However i would be flexible to update with the current codex and make it +10 points a model for them to get Ossific Blades (the same cost as a regular power weapon). And i think my store owners head is on perfectly straight thank you as this is just an idea. Chances are i will just use the new Blood Angel Codex but i just wanted to voice this idea as i am a brand new marine player
Ah goody, so you do have the whole article. Using the CA list as-is would be fine then. Since you didn't specify I had the impression you were just gonna swap ATSKNF with rending
Alright good to know, no harm done mate, does that mean that the Chapter Approved lists are still viable/able to be run legally in this edition? Just curious because id just want to use the rules found in the CA about cursed founding chapters (which means that i still cant take And they shall know no fear which sucks!) And would this be allowed to be used in a Gamesworkshop Tournament?

I've recently become a fan of this thing called Dubstep. And you should too.

BGS has it. Most tournies won't be using the CA rules since they refer to an outdated edition and Codex, so it's best to keep this in mind and build your army so you can use it with one of the current Codices, all legitimate like. However, among your gaming group feel free to adapt these rules, homebrew your own, and generall go nuts with it. Do some playtesting, report your findings, and maybe get a little project started. Should be interesting.
