in my last few games (1750 points) i have tried something i have never done in my guards history, which is of course grey knight allies. they started as kind of a small project, i just wanted to paint the knights but then i figured meh what the hell ill run em in a game. i through in a squad of grey knight termies as fast attack with a brother captain and an incinerator. in the two games i have played with them they have pulled my ass out of trouble, and in the second game really put the boot down after i had the other guy on his heels.
my question is does anyone here swear by grey knight allies? are guard players generally hated for bringing them? are the not worth the points? and how do you use them? any help would be appreciated. thanks
Terminators are elite choices, not fast attack. GK termies are excellent in CC (and at range) but unfortunately they need transportation to get into CC. If you are using IG as a parent list this means hijacking an IG chimera. And to me that's a bit tissue papery to protect an expensive termie squad. Honestly the only time I'd take GKT using an IG parent list is a bare bones squad of 3 with a pair of psycannons.
ive been using the termies as a backup unit, i hold them in reserve then when they come if the enemy is close i bring em from the board edge and assault, but if when they come in i need them towards the rear i deep strike them, they draw a lot of firepower and usualy dont die, but either way it allows them to assault with them next turn, or if the enemy uses their arsenal to kill them or render them inefective i still have all my units the enemy ignored to pound them with
My own armies fluff practically dictates I have to run GKs on a regular basis.
Do I swear by them? No. I don't need them to win, but I'll put PAGKs and GKTs in my list if I decide I'm tired of being beaten around in close combat. I'll lean more towards just running PAGKs as a troop choice and putting them inside of a vendetta, to make them a powerful offensive troop choice that can dig in and hold out. They're still marines, so I don't make that particular mistake of believing they're godlike, but with a pair of psycannons or incinerators, it sometimes gives me the edge I need.
GKTs are a bit more unique. I have a lot of success with them, but they cost so flipping much (points wise, anyway), that it can become a real trouble finding a way to fit them in without sacrificing something large. If I do run them, they do spectacular, but they alone don't win me matches.
i only actually run GKT's in games that are 1750 or greater that way i dont actually sacrifice any units to get them i just drop a special weapon in one of my blob squads that i usaly run in my lists and i get alot of CC in return so its a good trade
Your not allowed to put grey nights in a valk it's against the rules.
So Sayuth the imperial Guard FAQ
Saved me about 20 seconds of looking up the FAQ to post here.
I've always chuckled at the thought of plopping down a land raider in an IG tank list (which is possible, thanks to the Inquisitor lords dedicated transport options unless someone can find something wrong with that).
I've come close to trying it on a couple of occassions (borrowing a buddies land raider), but the 250 point cost always stung.
One of these days I'm just going to make the jump and run a pure GK list. They're the only "Marine" chapter I will ever play.
One of these days...
