I played for the first time since 2nd ed this evening at the local GW games night. I had pretty much copied Sandwyrm's recent 1750 tourney list, minus the valks because I don't have any (boo hoo hoo)
The games were pretty good, I think we had a good time despite me being a complete noob but a mechanised force was just brutal at this casual level.
Anyway, I learned a lot that everyone probably knows anyway but I thought I would share:
1 - Dozer blades are awesome. There was a lot of area terrain and I was just bashing my way through it. With so much close ranged stuff that ability really came in handy.
2 - Autocannons are great. I totally agree with everyone who said they are far better than either missile launchers or lascannons. The bottom line - two shots are way better than one.
3 - Marbo is hilarious. In game one he threw his det pack into an assault squad and boom! off the table they run. The deep irony is that his destructive tendencies ensure the enemy will then waste ages ruthlessly trying to hunt him down despite him being a bit of a one shot unit. Hahaha he's so funny.
4 - I should get some Valkyries. Currently my force is 1500 points, the 1750 list with a pair of valks is way better for a few more points. I was running 8 tanks (5 chims, 2 LR and a HH), and it's just too many for a standard sized board, they get in each others way and block the valuable lines of sight from cover, clogging up choke points and creating a mess. Taking out two of the chimeras and replacing them with vendettas would reduce the clutter. It also helps with getting troops in the right place, in both games my demo dudes were totally out of position.
I did feel sorry for the opponents I faced (Marines then CSM) they just weren't set up for such a potent list. I really rocked them despite being a totally bungling noob, I forgot to use the det pack on my demolitions squad in both games, I set up my sentinels opposite his predator, totally forgot to use smoke for most of the game... Yeah it was so bad.
Glad to hear you're enjoying the army, it's a very nice list.
Marines and CSM can hang with it (CSM have it tougher, natch) just fine, hopefully your success can galvanize your fellow players into considering how to combat your army.

Well ironically I didn't set out to copy anyone's list but once I was done it looked suspiciously familiar!
I guess it means you guys have taught me well hahaha, so thanks everyone

I'm glad you had fun, and I'm glad I could help you out.
Keep practicing! Nothing, not even a good list matters as much as how often you play the game.
