Well, I was thinking that as there are a LOT of tough psychic models out there now (mephiston, tyranids with synapse creature, demon princes etc.), mostly lacking good invulnerable saves, would the bolter-stake crossbow actually be useful? I've never even heard of anyone taking them, have any of you had any luck with them?
I was thinking of running an elite inquisitor (in an IG list) and 3 acolytes all with bolter-stakes and then perhaps some warriors to bring plasma as it can fill a similar role.
as a side note, I thought an inquisitor lord with a similar set up, but also with a power stake and a couple of crusaders would be an excellent anti-swarmlord squad
If I've replied, i've probably used Italics...
www.goodbyeboltgun.blogspot.com - Some of my stuff.
If you could buy cheap crossbows (as opposed to combi-crossbows) for squads of sisters you could put the scare on some nid lists, but 2 shots a game makes them more of an afterthought - probably better off with a meltagun.
I keep on thinking about trying them, mainly because then I can model something with a crossbow. Alot of armies I face have at least 1 psyker in them so it would get used.
The main problem I can see though is that alot of people will tuck psykers into a squad so you'd have to get through everyone else first, and may end up killing the psyker with the initial fire so have no use for the crossbow. It would be good fun against battle psyker squads and seer counciles though.
My inquisitor lady takes a BSCB...it fits her role and WYSIWYG, and I had a couple of excess points to buy it with. I shot eldrad once, same game where I cut him down to LD7 with purgatus. In a lot of games, Lady Dame Inquisitor Stephanie Harrington doesn't do much (her retinue with two plasma guns, a plasma cannon, and a chimera are always effective), but when a magic-heavy army does show its ugly head, she's there to lop it off...
