I have been gaming for about 6/7 months now, mostly using Ultramarines. At my local store I normally face nids with the occasional codex marine thrown in with some space wolf topping followed up by Tau or guard or Eldar, but its mainly nids.
The trouble i have got is that in 6/7 months out of about 20 games i've got about 4 wins and 2 draws, now aside from blaming dice rolls and everything but me, I know the trouble lies with my list building and the fact that I love legion of the Dammed and Vanguard.
Which usually arive and die quite quickly, the same actually goes for any of my elites choices or my tanks. I even got Calger killed by a squad of dire avengers in close combat!
My typical list involves one or the other with a lot of tactical marines and scouts with the odd terminator squad and landraider what i dont know is which HQ choice to take or even if i should drop the legion of the dammend and vanguard in favour of more favourable tactics, like stop playing space marines or something.Any advice is welome and thanks in advance.

A full break down of your list would be useful. LotD aren't really all that great from what I've seen and in the Vanilla marine book Vanguard Vets are overpriced for me.
Taking a good base of Tactical marines is always a good, do they have transports at all and how are they configured? Also what type of termis and land raider combo are you running?
Hq choice is pretty open, my personal preference has always been chaplains, but then I am a BA player and have been since 3rd (mmm the good old days of free death co )
My full list:
10 tacticals + heavy bolter flamer
10 tacticals + melta multi melta
10 tacticals + plasme gun plasma cannon
5 scouts +tellion missile launcher
terminator assault squad with thunder hammers and land raider redeemer
10 man legion of the dammned with flamer heavy flamer, normally switch this to melta and multi melta depending on what I am facing
5 man vanguard squad with lighting claws power fist power sword power axe combat sheild and two plasma pistols
vindicator or predator
as for HQ i have trouble choosin between calgar or master of the forge or a chaplin and librarian combo.
I would recommend getting rid of that vanguard squad. Way too many points for 5 models. Assault squads are always nice to have. Then throw a jump pack chaplain it and you have a decent unit there. It always did pretty good for me anyway.
yeah i have considered making each of my vanguards a sergent for 5 assault sqauds from some fun
I'd ditch the Vanguard and LotD altogether. They are overpriced and underperforming (doubly so for Vanguard when they are actually good for BA).
I'd pick up Rhinos for your Tacticals, trick them out with multi-meltas and flamers (most versatile and cheapest set up, drive up to midfield and support).
I'd also go for AC/HB Preds over Vindicators. Preds can deal with armor, hordes, MCs, and are dirt cheap. Vindies are unreliable thanks to scatter and with cover in the mix they don't perform too well.
What you really need is adequate fire support to destroy/suppress enemy armor and get bad guys out of their rides so you can burn/assault them. Dreads with quad autocannons, AC/HB Preds, Typhoons, MM/HF speeders, and the like all fit this role very well.
For your HQ, I'd stick a Librarian in with your Termies. He's cheap, provides good psychic defense, and with Null Zone your Termies can munch anything in assault.

If you read though a pile of threads you'll find that most of the experienced marine players rate the Sternguard vets very highly and noone takes Vanguard. Sergeant Tellion is an excellent, fluffy character but best kept back for high point games, or used with a squad of snipers and a missile launcher to take out enemy heavy weapons or characters. The plasma armed tactical squad are costing you extra points, probably better to take the free weapon options - a missile launcher is one of the best weapons because of the choice of krak or frag missiles. Bikes are a very good for a balanced marine army as a fast attack choice, max out on melta weapons. As for the HQ choice, i'd go for a captain with power sword or relic blade for now. If you're playing 'nids NEVER split your tacticals into combat squads. Against guard, get into close combat ASAP, squad sergeants armed with power fists to wack vehicles.
I've been studying the rulebooks, reading the codices, and collecting vanilla marines for donkeys years but dont take anything i say as the right way to go. You will get as many different opinions as there are members of LO. Best to read all of it and then make your own mind up. Most importantly, ENJOY YOURSELF ! Your W.D.L. record looks good to me for a relative newcomer (better than mine). Your initial army selection, with three full tactical squads, is not too bad at all, but they might benefit from a few Rhinos.
Jager bombs. Very efficient at wiping out friend or foe.
See what i mean ? ==ME== posted excellent advice while i was typing mine up. Mind you, i am trying to do it after several Stella Artois.

I got some advice. Quit playing UltraSMufs. lol jp. Drop the Legion and the Vanguard. You could take 6 man Sternguard with a Razorback for a cheaper price over 10 man Legion. Then you can take a Land Raider Crusader over the Vanguard. I find my Vanguard are a great CC unit but they never make there points because of there price. Drop a Tactical squad. For a 8 to 10 man assault squad. Keep taking your Vindicator and keep taking your chapy. I hope this helps you out. I wouldn't take Rhinos at all. In my book they are just a waste of 50 points. My tactics are based around 1 or 2 APC's and a bunch of men. It will take sometime to make a list like mine work if your a novice player, but once you learn how to use this kind of list. It will just rule.

I am an Indestructible master of War.
thanks for all the advice, I am going to try out some sternguard but i think in a really big game i going to take both sternguard and vanguard as well as legion cause that just sounds like fun. Instead of rhinos how about a lot of drop pods, it gets a large portion there first turn for some rapid fire shooting and can be nasty. I am going to be running a dreadnought with plasma cannon and power fist so my tactical can take some other stuff. I do need more missile launchers and flamers for my marines to make them cheap and nasty.
And yes playing ultramarines is getting un fun, i think its time to look somewhere else, maybe fenris i hear they like a fight and a drink...
