Welcome to Librarium Online!
i'm just interested i suppose as to why others on this forum started collecting IG
For me it was entirely the guants ghosts books, i always saw the ad's in the back of the book for battle of macrage and one day decided to pick it up, after i decided i liked the game i started collecting guard as my first real army. so what about you guys?
For me it was when i first started out a long time ago back when i had just entered junior high. I had been playing Space Wolves since 4th grade when i got so bored with marines i still to this day refuse to play as them. All my friends were marines, all the people at my local gaming store were marines. Whenever there was a tournament it was 90% marines so i got totally bored with the whole idea. One day i just walked into the store and saw a guy wanting to sell some of his steel legion guard with the armageddon codex and the rest is history. Been playing with them ever since its just taken me until now to really start upgrading them and putting an army together as i just really got back into the game a few months ago. Also the Guants Ghosts books and other imperial guard novels helped me in my desicion.
Real players go Guard....Real Men go Airborne!
Tanks, oh, gloroius tanks... ^^
-"Oh God, this is going to take a while..."
For me it was probably back in 5th grade. My friend starting playing smurfs so I wanted to play too and being as competitive as we were with each other I wanted to play something different. Having never read the brb or any codex or any sort I went into my local store and saw the Leman Russ. And that was that. I got out of the game through between 2001 and 2009. After getting back in I started playing Space Wolves though I play guard as a second army all because I LOVE the Vendetta. Wish they were available back then!
For me it was the idea that a simple, humble human with a lasgun can take on a space marine and win. Oh and the fact that massed firepower is the order of the day- sometimes the space marines do look stupid when a guardsman says 'open fire' to obvious effect...
My 1st army was also space wolves...
Anyway, I just love the models and the lots of possibilties how to play guard
I liked the ability to emulate current real-world armies, both in list design and in tactics. My current 1750 IG list, for example, is a near-perfect copy of an American task-organized mechanized infantry company...that means two mechanized infantry platoons and one tank platoon under a mech infantry headquarters...with four vehicles per platoon:
Company HQ: command squad in a chimera. Two griffons.
First platoon: Three line squads and a command squad, all in chimeras.
Second platoon: carbon copy of first platoon.
Third platoon: Four leman russes.
Except for the fact that the two track-mounted heavy mortars would actually be attached to the battalion HQ (and there'd be four of them, not two), it's perfect. And there's certainly precedent for the battalion to attach a mortar section directly to one of the line companies for the duration of an operation.

When I first started I was living in a small town and when a group of friends started playing no one was playing Guard so I started them. I staid with Guard because I love the steel legion models and tanks.
If you do things right people wont be sure if you have done anything at all.
A long time ago with far too much time & money on my hands I brought bits & bobs of everything, then I got married & brought a house and sold most of my stuff or gave it to friends who were still playing at the time. Now my son is getting older & I wish I hadn't. with this in mind I had kept a small: orc, woodelf, empire & dwarf armies but nothing 40K unless you count a great unclean one, 60 plaguebearers & 10 plagueriders. As most of the kids in the school I now teach in, wasn't a teacher back then or a father so I had so much more time, only play 40K so with this in mind & knowing how long it takes me to paint anything I decided to do 3 different armies for him to use with friends or me. So I built an Eldar spirit host army as an elite army & am building an Orc horde & Tallarn Imperial because I like the feel of the army & have a lot ( 30 ) old metal dark elf coldones I want to convert to Tallarn rough riders just 'cause they look nice, but like the others said it also has the tank & artillery options other armies lack in numbers.
