I think I've got the other special chapters nailed down at some level... Blood Angels are to my understanding a jump-pack assault army, Black Templars are a footman, outlast assault army and Dark Angels are shooty marines with some special army types (Revenwing & Deathwing) but how do Space Wolves play?
No, no... Seriously, though, the SW are close combat-oriented with special rules like Counter Charge and the fact all their normal "tactical" marines carry pistols, swords and bolters and have access to things like the Wulfen and the Wolf Standard. They can also hold their own quite well in a ranged firefight, but it is in close combat that they truly excel. Then again, what else would you expect from a bunch of astroviking werewolves?
Don't forget the Thunderwolf Cavalry, or TWC, as the cool kids call it. It's nearly the only unit in all of 40k that actually uses the "cavalry" rules, and it's definitely the best. CC infantry supported by TWC. Not the only way to play them, but arguably one of the most SW-unique ways.
The Wolves of Fenris will not be able to out shoot somebody, for lack of long range weaponry, but in mid-short range they are deadly. While they reward an aggressive CC general, they can be played in many, extremely different ways.
Space Wolves are very different from vanilla marines. They have a lot of nasty characters (up to 4 HQs), Sergeants run around in their own unit and can join others, they bring the pain on foot with lots of mean choppy cav, and can really field a wide variety of armies that are unique from normal SM while still being viable.
Another great thing about Wolves is that they are very diverse. You can launch an all out attack or sit back and shoot, then counter attack! Even though Space Wolves are very close combat oriented, they can also be played as a shooting army, or a CC army with long range shooting.
And this is exactly why I love the space wolves, when it comes to writing a "balanced" list they don't make it hard, though it is very easy to cross the line to "cheese" with rune priest spam. Throwing a few rune priests, a power fist Wolf Guard along with a squad of grey hunters into a rhino with support from long fangs/vindicator and basically have fun with the rest of the list. Gives you strong close combat, strong long range/pile plate or even split fire long range, a powerful and decent sized assault squad, throw in some very powerful psychic powers and great psychic shut down for such a low cost and you have yourself a very well rounded start to a list.
well i loved the space wolves omnibus books so much ive got a SW army based upon the wolf lord Ragnar 'Blackmane' Thunderfist who rocks and from what i have learned that is one of the best HQ for CQB in 40k universe
Devastators and Vindicators are among your good friends with an assault army. I mean come on, a S10 AP2 tank, and a squad of heavy bolters (against Eldar or Orks), will really whittle down the enemies ability to fight back when the Sons of Russ charge them
