After reading various posts and tacticas,i added 4 Landspeeders to my collection. I fully intended to make them all Typhoons, until doubt suddenly stayed my hand. They are now built, bar the weapons.
My question is:are Typhoons really the flying awesomness people say or do you suggest i playtest the other builds first?
I would suggest playtesting the various weapon loadouts first. See which fits your personal playstyle before you decide. Another option would be using magnets on your weapons/speeders so you can modify them as needed.
Personally I think that while the Typhoon is rather good other loadouts can be better depending on who you have to fight and what role you assign to your landspeeders.
I started running 2 x Land Speeder Typhoons (TML/HB config) in my army lists a few months ago and boy, have they paid off. Against Mech lists they are excellent for punching through transport armour and against Tyranids they excel at taking out MCs. You're also able to bust out the frag templates, giving you great anti-horde capability. The best thing is that the TML is Heavy 2, meaning both shots count as one weapon. So you can shoot your HB too.
I love Typhoons and can no longer see myself playing without them.
I've got nothing but good things to say about Typhoon Land Speeders: versatile (Frag and Krak missiles meaning they can target hordes and armour), put out quite a rate of firepower (Heavy 2) and have a great range, keeping them out of the range of small arms fire.
Typhoons are the way forward.
All Landspeeders suffer with their fragile armour.......but not the Typhoon. It can sit out of range of most return fire, insta kill T4 models, slap light armour hard and be mobile enough to hunt targets. I never use less that 2 in any list from 1000pts upwards.
I also, run a LSTyphoon (HB/TML). Along with a MM/MM Land Speeder. They are in individual slots so they rarely hunt the same target. However, they have been quite effective as a 1-2 punch to a heavy transport vehicle (LR). Melta it open, then pour on the fire to its contents.
Many times the LSTyphoon, is paired with a Tonado (HB/H, for some good ole Infantry hunting. The long range keeps them relatively safe, and they are quite effective Infantry hunters, with the ability to crack med-light transports.
I usually pair mine in squadrons with an HB tornado as well. I've found that proper abuse of the squadron damage allocation rules can keep the typhoon launcher firing for a very long time, despite only being 10 around armour.
You could solve this problem by magnetizing the land speeders. That way you can change the loadout game to game.
