ive posted 2 lists on here so far and both of them include 2 tech-priests and at least 2 servitors each and so far about 4 people have said to drop them? why is that? ive always found my humble tech-adepts to be useful models and wont enter battle without at least 1, ive also found that not only are they good at repeiring tanks but also good at defending them, if the enemy get too close then a charging tech unit is surprisingly powerful
im sad that they are so undervalued to be perfectly honest
For the price you can field infantry with good guns or just more tanks. Don't keep your tanks static and sport hull flamers and you won't have to worry as much about enemy assaulters.
Tech Priests are overpriced and largely unnecessary. Take 'em if you like, but it's not everybody's bag.
The minimum cost of an Techpriest and three tech servitors (so he has a decent chance to repair things) is 90 points. If you kit out the squad with a couple of Plasma Cannon servitors, you're now talking 180 points. That's a LOT of points for the chance to repair only 2 of the 6 possible outcomes from a penetrating or glancing hit. It would be much better just to buy another Russ, Sentinel Squadron, Valk, or Chimelta Squad instead.
As for close-combat, why? As ==He== said, if you move your tanks every turn and take heavy flamers on the hulls, you'll never need the mediocre assistance that a Techpriest can give.
To top it all off, you can't buy him a dedicated transport so he can actually follow the tanks that he's supposed to be repairing. How goofy is that?
Now if he had the ability to let me ignore stunned/shaken results for every tank within 12" or gave me a saving throw vs. Weapon Destroyed/Immobilized results, I'd take him in a heatbeat. But he just doesn't offer anything I don't already have through other means. It's obvious that Cruddice didn't think about his entry or point cost for more than a couple of minutes.

This. QFT. For 180 points, it could buy you 3 Chimeras, or a Vendetta, or a demolisher, or an Autocannon sentinel squadron (heavy or otherwise), two veteran squads, a platoon, a squad of PAGKs, almost enough for a brother captain and small retinue of GKTs . If you can stand there and say that he's better than ALL those options, then go ahead and grab him.
Now, to qualify, I DO have one, and I play him in friendly matches, but I never mistake him for what he is: A fun piece. That's all. If I want CC punch, I take GKTs. If I want plasma cannons (well, I usually don't, but IF I do), I'll take a Russ. If I want tank repairing, I take another tank instead, so I can kill the guy that would damage my tank before he has a chance to do it.
It's a fun unit, but it just isn't worth the cost to make it effective.
To be fair, Techpriests/Techmarines have never been good, as long as I've been playing. Even when they were marginally useful, it wasn't for fixing vehicles, just the signum and maybe servitors.
He is a nice fluffy unit, why oh why could they not make them a bit more cost effective or useful?
I have a model, no servitors, just to look pretty really.
Arch Overfiend & Grand Despot
I currently play:
Doom Eagle Space Marines
Hive Fleet Omega Tyranids
Goff Ork Boyz(dead)
Tau of O'me
Inquisitorial Xeno Hunters
and my attempted foray into fantasy
'Dark Angel Green' Dark Elves in need of fluff
now have you ever seen a heavy flamer kill 5 terminators? i havnt. but i HAVE seen 5 deepstrike behind a lemun russ, blow its turrret off then get killed by a servitor and his retinue, ok the servitor died aswel but they cost alot less than the terminators, and then a list with 2 servitors is still able to go fix that lemun russ
you can plan and scheme as much as you want, there are always variables. there is not a single choice in the guard book that is useless, the least useful is special weapons teams and lemun russ vanquisher, then lemun russ exterminator, then the devil dog, las cannons on sentinels, then techpriest enginseers
Fantasy : Empire, Chaos Warriors, Chaos Daemons, Vampire Counts, Beastmen, High Elves, Lizardmen( but i have opinions on every army just not the money)
40k: Black Templars, Imperial Guard, Dark Eldar, Tau (thinking of Eldar)
i agree mostly with collins, BUT OH!!! whats that about the Exterminator? id like to see a squad of marines or terminators survive a volley from 6 plasma-cannons! devil dogs are less useful, but fun ^.^ and las-cannons on sentinels wrekked mikes predator so dont underestimate them!
Heheh, the Exterminator is the autocannon variant. You're thinking of the Executioner, which is only 5 plasma cannon shots at best (It's a fun tank, but expensive as all hell).
ah fair enough, its not useless either, good against infantry and give it 3 heavy bolters it'll mow dow other guardsmen and most tandard infantry units like fire warriors or orks its main gun is like the hydra but doesnt ignore turbo boosting
