I purchased Assault on Black Reach a good while ago, and am getting round to the point where I have painted the Space Marines, as Ultramarines. I'm still not sure if I'm ever going to actually play this game properly, but I do enjoy painting minis so I'm looking to get another unit to add to the army.
As I said, I'm not sure if I will ever play the game properly, but just incase, I'd like to buy an extra unit that doesn't just look good, but will also make a useful addition to a quite limited Space Marines force.
My initial thought is to go for a squad of Sniper Scouts, but I'm not too sure.
If you were in my shoes, what would your next purchase be?
If all you have is the Assault on Black Reach set so far I would actually recommend making your next purchase a second Tactical Squad. Sniper Scouts would also work to make it a legal army, as would a standard Scout squad.
After that however, I'd consider adding a vehicle or two. A Predator for instance. Alternately a Rhino/Razorback for your tactical squads or even a Land Raider for the Terminators. If you go with the Land Raider though, I'd also pick up Assault Terminators since they benefit more and (to me at least) look better.
Also: If you're only going for looks, I'm partial to the way a Sternguard Veteran Squad looks.

You're gonna need another Troops choice, so Tacticals or Scouts.
I'd highly recommend picking up some vehicles too. Predators, Rhinos, Speeders and Dreads all give you mobility, firepower, and a whole bunch of benefits only vehicles have (mobility, improved survivability, tank shock, movement/LoS blocking, and so on).
To play a low point legal game, if you have 1 full tactical squad, you can actually just create 2 5-man tactical squads (neither can have a heavy weapon, just use your ML guy as a regular marine) and then be "legal" from a Force Organization Chart point of view. It doesn't sound like you'll be entering any tournaments any time soon, so your friends or gaming group, shouldn't be so relentless on the whole WYSIWYG factor.
Painting and Modeling:
If you are into the painting and modeling aspect, but still want that outside chance if you are going to play a game or something. I'd highly suggest the Sniper Scouts. There's much more detail to paint and customize than another Tactical squad.
Also, I'd suggest grabbing a Devastator box. That box has access to 8 Heavy Weapons, and 5 Marines. You'll eventually come to the point where you will have a few extra pairs of legs and torsos, and you'll be able to make "free" heavy weapon marines.
Grabbing a Command Squad box, wouldn't be a bad avenue either. There are loads of unique models in that box. Apothecary, Banner Marine, Company Champion, even a plasma gun, and a power fist.
As far as playing the game the best suggestion of mine is the Sniper Scouts, they're fun to play, although definitely not as effective as another full Tactical Squad.
Cheers guys, appreciated.
Yeah, those Sternguard veterans look pretty good - are they just a tactical squad with bells on?
And yeah, I think a vehicle is probably the best shout. Are Rhinos the best one generally?
Sternguard have a couple special rules and special ammunition, as well as better equipment. They function similarly to a tactical squad but they hurt more.
Rhinos are a cheap troop transport. They are good for getting Marines from point A to point B and not a lot else. Razorbacks can't carry a full squad but I tend to use them more because I love Combat Squads. Land Raiders are one of the toughest things in the game and carry a lot of firepower as well as the ability to transport Terminators, which leads me to almost always take one.
I'm starting to think I'm gonna need a lot more free time, and more money. Time to get rid of either the girlfriend or the xbox...
Well, one of them is a temperamental money pit that can give you hours of enjoyment in exchange for all of your money and will suddenly stop for now reason and cut you off for months. The other is a gaming console.
Rhinos are a cheap transport that gives you mobility, protection, and all the flexibility tanks offer. I wouldn't run Tac squads unless they were meched up.
