Which do you prefer? Any Idea on the Mathhammer behind them? Giving up an attack for better to woond is good, but if you are furious charging? IS it worth giving dual lightning claws for 30 pts?
What does everyone think
To me, it isn't lighning claws vs power weapons, so much as lightning claws versus power fists. Most of the time where a lightning claw would be appropriate, I'd rather have the pfist or thunder hammer. Thing is, pfists can just wound things that lighning claws can't.
Red Archer did some math a while back that found that a single lightning claw was statistically better than a power weapon for the same price. I'm not sure how this changes with Furious Charge.

Aye i remember that Math Red did. If i remember correctly the Power weapon did better against Low Toughness units due to the extra attack. Other than that The lightning Claw performed better against everything of T4 and better.
Furious Charge probably helps the Power Weapon out more than the Claw, but thats more my gut math than any Mathmatic jiggerery pokerery.
Well, I got out my slide rule, and found that against a marine, a Power weapon does one wound ( 4 attacks, S4) and 1.25 with furious charge.
Claws, with only one claw, do 1.12 at S4 and 1.33 with S5 1.33 wounds.
With two claws, the wounds go to 1.5 and 1.78 at S5.
A fist, with 3 attacks, hist 1.5 times, and wounds only 1.25 times. But, it can hurt a dread...
Hmm. I need to do some cost at the margin math...
I think the advantage the power weapons get from increased strength with furious charge is offset by the extra attack that both gets from charging in the first place.. The higher the amount of base attacks the less the extra one from the PW matters.
Might hammer it later and add here unless someone else does before me.
Actually just go to RedArchers post here: http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...out-power.html
Or read the conclusion here:
The increase in strength from FC works exactly like lowering the opponents toughness by one.
So when charging Space Marines (T4 in general) both weapons are equally good.
Against higher toughness and the claw is better any lower values of T and the PW is preferable.
Assuming it's a Space Marine Sergeants equipment we're talking about that is.. for Captain the better choice of the two would almost always be the Claw.

Keep in mind their is a hidden advantage to the PW over the claw as well though, one that has less to do with Mathhammer and more to do with the actual gameplay in reality. That advantage is that if you roll well the claws advantages are negated, and furthermore if you hit and wound with all the power weapon attacks you have done one more wound than the claw could ever do, because you had the extra attack. This is something that everyone seems to forget, but its part of the reason why mathhammer is only half the formula to a good game.
Nevermore Chapter: 6200 pts; 97/49/11; Longest Streak: 9 Wins/4 Losses; Nearing Completion
now i will be honest in saying the power weapon is the least used special weapon in all of my armies, squad sgt's IMO are better off with a power fist because at the end of the combat should still be there to hit stuff with it, and claws are always better on IC, and even with my termies a mix 2 thunder hammers and storm shields in with 3 claws, but then again i play templars, so on the charge i get 4 attacks at str5, int5 rerolling hits and wounds... which is why i love claws so much.
im not goin to math hammer it properly, but it costs 15points more for 2 claws compared to a power sword for my marshall, who on the charge has 6 attacks, 5 of which should hit ws4(preffered enemy), 2or3 of which should wound without FC, 3 wounds with FC
with claws its still 5 hits, but 4 wounds without FC, at a push should get all 5 with FC, which is usually 1 or 2 more dead marines... extra cost is therefore worth it.
Fantasy : Empire, Chaos Warriors, Chaos Daemons, Vampire Counts, Beastmen, High Elves, Lizardmen( but i have opinions on every army just not the money)
40k: Black Templars, Imperial Guard, Dark Eldar, Tau (thinking of Eldar)
