Hey guys, i used to play a few years back, kinda stopped cuz the place i played at closed down. Anyway im getting back into it now that the new Ish is out, picked up a new rulebook, read through some codexs'. But im having a tough time deciding what army i want to be. I was IG before, and i kinda got tired of never being able to charge anything, but i dont want to be all assault either, i want to be balanced -so im thinking space marines(just what the world needs right, another SM army ). but i was thinking of doing the Blood angels chapter. I hear they are great for assaulting. I dont plan to get a huge army, prob 1000 points is where im going to stop, since its just me and 2 other friends and we're poor teenagers lol. My friend is doing the Tyranids though, and im pretty worried because i know their sick at HtH. So i guess my main questions are...
- Are blood angels a good army for low-points battles(1000ptsTOP)
- Do i need to get both the BA and the SM codexs?
- What squads should i get? i hear great things about death companys
- Do i have a chance against Tyranids, and if so - whats my best strategy
thanks in advance for any help guys.
P.S. this was posted in the main armies section at first, but i thought you guys would be better suited to help in here.
ok they are redoing all the codex's so hold on pick out the blood anges but dont comit just yet second of foe de playes and cwe (craftwold eldar) the codex are being put to gether
I adopted a cute lil' ninja fetus
from Fetusmart! Hooray fetus! </a>
hahahahahahaha i have a ....ermmm thing in a jar .... help
No offense intended, and maybe its just cuz ive been up all night, but the last half of your statement doesnt make sense..(to me).
They are redoing the BA codex? or the SM codex? both? when is it/they sapposed to come out? cant i just run off the old ones till the new ones come out? are the acual STATS of the marines going to change? or just fluff, or whatever.
everything has to be so complicated these days
LOL, no you are right, but his point is this,
in one to 2 months, a new marine codex will come out, this may change everything.
To answer your initial Qs:
1. Difficult one. in 400 points (40K in 40 mins) BA have one heck of an expensive but powerful option in a chaplain. At 1000 points you are still pretty much taking a 200 points chaplain plus some tac squads and a few extras. Overall I would say yes (obviously a subjective opinion) but they have lost some of their impact with the demise of the rhino rush in 4th ed rules
2. Currently yes you need codex Blood angels and codex space marine. This may be changed in 2 months as above
3. HQ: get a chaplain with a jump pack and about 10 assult marines for death company
Elites: personnaly I dont touch them for BA,
Troops: full squad of scouts equiped for close combat. plus several small (6 man) squads without heavy weapons mounted in razorbacks with TL las cannon
FA: assult squads are pretty nifty but any FA choice fits BA
HS: take a pred annih and a whirlwind, although if you are only really facing tryranids a Baal clas pred would be better then the annih
4. Absolutley. ue a Baal and a whirlwinf to shoot the pants off him, ditto the tac squads, have the razorbacks take out his monsterous cretures. when he gets close charge him with death comany and the scouts
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Lol damnit, i dont want to wait 2 friggin months, but then again, i dont want to start collecting an army, just to have GW change the stats of the guys or special rules and rape them....(which with my luck, they would). any ideas if the changes are sapposed to be drastic? maybe i should go with a different race...
well for one thing you should read the codex before actualy choosing them, sit in a GW and read what their plusses and minuses are.
*If you don't like moving things that need to stand still to shoot, Don't play blood angels (blood rage: in the beguining of your turn roll a D6, on a 1 the unit/tank moves forward D6 inches)
*If you like Jump Squads, Blood angels are one of the best sence they can get Death company, Honor guard, Vet. assult squad and a regular assult squad. (what makes their assult best is they get +1 str. and +1 In. on the charge, they also have their D6 movement added if they roll a 1 for blood rage)
*Great Fluff, having the Emperors favorite for a primearch is pretty nice (I know some people are going to say he isn't, but the Angels of Death 2nd Ed. codex makes it sound like he is)
I've been playing them for almost 3 years and my Boyfriend has been playing them for 6. Both of us like them verry much. You just have to remember one thing, never expect your devistators, snipers, and whirlwind, to do what you want them to. It's hard to explain an army to some one that doesn't have the codex or know the rules of the chapter real well.
If you like useing whirlwinds, devistators, etc. you might want to check out Spacewolves. They are similar to Blood angels in many ways and they have some pretty sweet things about them. My buddy play spacewolves, every time we play we get a draw.
Well I hope this helps a bit ^_^

Cool thanks, no i definatley like the idea of fielding only a few squads of very strong guys,(i used to play IG and having a crapload of units got old) and i wanted an assault-based army of the blood angels. And i would go start a BA army tomorrow to get back into warhammer, its just that- it seems like a waste to go out, buy the two codex's(BAs and SM), but the starter army, and then like a sqaud of this and that to get started, and then in a month or two, have a new codex come out, and not only have to buy THAT, but also risk having the SMs stats changed, or some key part of the BAs removed. im just worried that the new codex will rape my army just when i got it up and playable, or atleast make it weaker.
P.S. would they do well against tyranids in low points games?(750-1k)
and thanks for the attempt to explain the armys fee; to me, i know its prob hard since im a newby all over again and i dont understand a whole lot about BAs, but you cleared some stuff up for me- i appreciate it
new space marine codex is coming out soon yeah and followed by the specialist chapters im sure
Blood angels are good in the assault but you do not want small squads of tough guys.. Ive learned that over many years of playing BA. Your marines may kick ass but just about anything in the game can murder low numbers of marines
You still want a good 20 tactical marines, right now im trying to expand my 1500pt army to house over 50 guys since attrition just means you lose..
Ultras are probably best for Tyranids, they get special units for attacking them. But BA are preferable in my opinion.
Ravenwing: list made, now just to buy all the stuff on it (why do bikes have to be so expensive?)
blood angels will do fine against tyranids, they get the low armor/no armor killer tank... tha Baal preditor. No matter if you put heavy flamers or heavy bolters you'll rip threw tyranids pretty well. ^_^
