So before anyone complains that I'm whining over an already powerful character, I'm not
I don't want him to be more powerful, I just don't understand why they took him the way they did.
Firstly. He is one of the oldest spacemarines alive (at least alive enough to be moving without the power of a dreadnought body) and yet he doesn't have eternal warrior.
Second. No rites of battle or chapter trait? Hes a chapter master surely he should effect the entire army by being on the field.
Lasty. Whats up with this -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 bonus against an enemy IC? really don't understand the fluff on this and although its a powerful bonus for the BA player, it could have been better spent on beefing him up and/or giving him a trait or something close to it.
I'd like to hear your opinions on my rant... maybe you can convince me otherwise or agree and come up with better variants (not stupidly overpowered dream variants)
mm there are some good points there but to be honest i am not really a big BA fan and although its nice to see a chapter with lots of useful characters i still think some of the older ones such as the templars and DA need a revision but i would love to see a templars codex next that would be an interesting read.
i do agree that when there is a powerful char such as Dante then there should be some sort of affect his presence has on the army good or bad it would be nice to see that reflected in the codex. say like a trait that emboldens the troops under his command say like they get first attack in cc situations when hes with in 12" of any troop choice.

While I see the merits of your points, I think that the unique things about him (no scatter, the super death mask curse) give him a bit of individuality over the sort of cookie cutter special character traits that you mentioned. Not having some of those traits sort of forces players to decide if they want to field the character of Dante and enjoy his special benefits, or field a non-special character and have a more standardized force. This way, it's not the kind of choice where you'd be foolish not to choose a certain way.
I think that some of his traits could be explained through fluff, such as not having Rites of Battle because he's a peerless warrior and leads by seeking out the enemy commander and killing him, as opposed to a Captain's way, which would be by using rites of battle. The death mask curse I guess could be explained by Sanguinius' psychic abilities being carried over into his death mask. I imagine it isn't like Dante uses his mask and curses someone before the battle, but more like when he's on the field the mask guides him to the most dangerous target and helps him kill it. I admit, I don't know how not having Eternal Warrior could be justified through fluff. I can only guess that GW was trying to make special characters more special by not giving them all similar traits.
Edit: Also, the no scatter rule seems pretty sick. I haven't had a chance to try it out, but I was thinking about putting him in an honor guard with a few flamers and meltas and letting him deep strike behind a tank/command squad and letting him drop serious shooty pain on the enemy.

Still, the lack of Eternal warrior on these guys is a pain.
I dont mind it if they are going to be judicious in thier application of eternal warrior with other armies as well. Basicly one character per codex.. It gets unrealistic when you blow up a squad of terminators witha desroyer weapon and the eternal warrior figure escapes with a meer scratch. Not that 40k isnt realistic of course. Now if the Dark Eldar suddenaly are able to field 4 eternal warrors when their codex comes out, im crying foul.

I strongly agree that Dante should have had Eternal Warrior.. I mean just how much more eternal can you be?! Even if his fluff partly describes him as being emo and whiny he's still lived through a whole lot, so should have it..
On the same account I disagree that Mephiston should have it. There's only a handful of ways to instant kill him, most require CC in which Mephiston excels.. I pity the librarian ordered to charge Mephiston. Also Wraithguard's chances aren't all that good to be honest, and if they fail they're done for, it's a toss-up, but Wraithguard+Warlock+Serpent costs more than Mephiston, so only fair they're able to take him out, no?
Back to Dante he does modify his armylist by letting you take more Sanguinary Guards, but I agree I would've liked to see an armybuff rather than this. Though if the Guards had rocked I'm sure people would have screamed cheese.
I also agree on the final count that it'd be far better to buff him directly rather than having him do voodoo, which might even reduce the amount of fun for the enemy. "Your oh so high and mighty special character that you identify yourself with is now only mediocre."
No Rites of Battle is bad, but they've phased it out overall (except with Sicarius and Tycho) so it's not surprising. I've gone on before about how I really miss Rites of Battle, but whatever.
No orbital bombardment is like...what? All the other Chapter Masters have orbital bombardment. Okay, he has other special rules. But are they "special" special rules or compensatory rules? Is his no-scatter supposed to make up for no orbital bombardment? Because there are other guys like Pedro who combine a bunch of special rules with orbital bombardment. It's a big "what", right up there with the no Eternal Warrior. I would have given up SG as Troops and the hit-and-run in exchange for Eternal Warrior. SG are poop and hit-and-run does nothing if Dante dies in the first phase to a power fist.

Eh I can live without Eternal Warrior. The problem giving Date Eternal Warrior is it'd make him pretty much the same as Sanguinor. 2 Fly boy Eternal Warriors is a little too much. The thing that gets me is that he's Dante.... Chapter Master of the Blood Angels who are a very close combat orientated Chapter and what does the Master of the Chapter weild? A Power Weapon. I've got Captains and Sergeants with better weapons. Surely the Axe Morkai should confer a little bit 'extra'. +1 Str perhapse? Re-roll to wound...... +1 Attack?.. Something to make it not seem like someone bigger Chapter Master has come along, beaten him up, and stolen his Weapon and lunch money.
As for Orbital Bombardment. Eh, how many of you can honestly say that you'll be standing still with Dante? It would be having a rule for the sake of having a rule.
