I'm in the process of putting together my first Imperial Guard army. I managed to get through the 3 Leman Russes, after having to order a bunch of bits to finish the side weapons. Now I'm stuck on what to do with my three veteran squads that will be riding my Vendettas.
I'm not sure how to differentiate my veterans from normal troops, and then how to model the melta bombs and demolition charges.
How does everyone else do it?
they sell them at forgeworld...
I have made many demo charges by modifying 2 autocannon ammo clips glued together.
you can get melta bombs from the space marine sprues (though they are a little big, what do you expect for a tank destroying grenade?)
If you know someone with Elysian drop troops from forgeworld they usually have an excess of demo charges in their collection as the standard squads include them. Forgeworld male a nice Cadian upgrade set with different heads with respirators etc and plenty of backpack and weapon options. You only need to model 2-3 gus per squad carrying meltabombs in their hands to represent the whole squad having them. ask a marine player who has the space marine assault squads as they get plenty on the sprues.
You can also buy alternate heads from Secrets of the third reik, or pig iron productions.

I model my veterans by giving them more equipment than the regular guys. I just add the belt equipment from the normal cadian box.
For demo charges, I was going to use a meltabomb on some string so I could remove it from the model once it's been thrown, but I hadn't thought of how to model the actual meltabombs. The big marine ones seem almost comically large.
Yes, but since these are grenades that clamp onto tanks and can utterly destroy them. The big marine ones seem almost comically large.
AND they are smaller than demo charges anyway...
If they are using a doctrine that gives them Carapace Armour you could mix'n'match your guard with SM scouts. I know somebody that uses scouts for Stormtroopers.
The demolition charge of the elysians is almost the same as the tankbusta bombz, which come in every ork boyz box, just ask an ork player and they mostly have one left

I used a lascannon power cell melded with a flat piece of plastic.
