Just wanted to get your thoughts on Vanguard Vets for BA. I long ago gave up on Vanguard for vanilla. The point cost was just too much to make them worth it. However with Descent of Angels it makes a little difference. Reroll reserve rolls and scatter only 1 d6 plus assault on arrival is a powerful thing. Even though you can't get the benefits of a special character attatched to them from the start of the game, but still they seem a tad more tempting now. What do y'all think?
In the Castle of Pain on a Mountain of Skulls I sat on a Throne of Blood. What was will be, what is will be no more. Now is the season of Evil!

It is more plausible for sure, but still pretty expensive, especially when you can field Assault troopers as regular troops. Might as well get some scoring out of it.
Still, it would be pretty awesome if it worked out to where your Vanguard units arrived just in time like the fluff for heroic intervention describes.

They're still very expensive and still don't hit very hard compared to other assault units. So, slightly more useful, but still not very useful. They need to be cheaper and/or better.

I think their 'charge on the drop' ability would be much more useful if it weren't for the emphasis on mechanized armies these days. It doesn't help to get the heroic intervention if your only targets are transports moving at high speed.

On the uselessness scale of 0-10, with 0 being completely useless, and 10 being must takes no matter what, Vanguard in the vanilla codex were a 2. Unless you have a weighted dice for scatter their heroic intervention is either going to scatter out of range of the unit, or you're going to mishap on top of them. And of course, the cost was insane. No thank you.
BA vanguard move up slightly thanks to a minor points reduction and descent of angels. How much? To a 3.5. 5 guys with jump packs is really freakin' expensive, and though they have a much higher chance of landing where and when you want them too, they are still just a bunch of 3+ save mooks. Best case scenario is they land, kill a unit, and then get shot up. Good luck making those points back, btw. SimSnow hit the nail on the head, assault squads are much better for your cost. Sure, you can't assault straight out of deep striking, but then again, they have much more versatility than that one trick pony of a vanguard squad.
How can they make vanguard better? Include jump packs in their initial cost and make them 25 points a model. Aren't they supposed to be the flying complement of Sternguard? So why do sternguard get all that awesome special ammo, plus a boosted profile, for 25 points, while vanguard cost 5 points more for what they need?
Secondly, take the cost chart from the Wolf Guard. Cheaper special CC weapons makes sense for these guys. It does not make sense for a vanguard with a jump pack and powersword to cost 5 points more than a terminator. It does make sense for them to cost 5 points less however.
GW got one thing right in the new codex, Devastators. I only hope that the next time we see vanguard they get fixed too.
