I have already read about this before but i just wanna double check just to make sure that i am not wrong, here's my question is an honor guard & retinue two separate things what i mean is "if a Captain & his Honor Guard are in close combat are you able to direct all hits &/or allocate wounds at him or can he take them wounds from his Honor Guard like you can with a Retinue" thanx
You can't include an honor guard with a captain, only with a chapter master. And yes, the captain, or any other IC, is a separate unit from the command squad/honor guard unit. He can either join them, any other allowable unit or none, at the controlling player discretion.
Also, the concept of retinue in 5th edition is pretty much extinct, especially with Space Marines.
In close combat, the IC is treated as a separate unit and the attacking player need to specify how many attacks from eligible models will go against the IC and how many will be against the rest of the squad. Wounds produced against the IC can only be saved by the independent character and wounds against the squad can only be saved by the squad.
