I will be purchasing my entire Space Wolves Mech Army at once and very soon, and I was wondering what you all think would be better for the purpose of popping enemy transports early, drawing fire away from my transports, and all around versatility.
What I was thinking was 3 Land Speeders, Multi-meltas and Heavy flamers or 1 Venerable Dreadnought with Multi-melta in a pod (probably with Deathwind ML). The difference of 10 points is negligible to me and my list.
For informational purposes here is a quick breakdown of my list (a good mix of fun units and competitiveness I think)
Ragnar with Grey Hunters 2 meltas and decked for CCin Land Raider Crusader
Rune Priest with 5 Grey Hunters with plasmagun in rhino
2 Units of Grey Hunters in rhinos with meltas and powerfist WG
Last but not least whatever I decide for my last option (land speeders or dropping dread)
thanks in advance for your help!
The ven. dread gets my vote for drawing enemy fire if you drop pod it in your opponents lap, but for popping his transports i would change the land speeders to missile launcher and heavy bolter typhoons, and do them from range.
Jager bombs. Very efficient at wiping out friend or foe.
I'd go for 3 land speeders with both MM+HF. They threaten both vehicles and hordes, and the opponent can't really ignore them in objectives-based games as they're 3 fast units waiting to contest. If you're playing KP, you can always squad them up to reduce the KP count. Vendread can only threaten 1 vehicle. The LS's will threaten 3 separate targets.
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2
Well with the Landspeeders I would do 1 unit because I make my list before I roll for mission. How easy is a squad of Landspeeders to kill? They seem very fragile, even with 3, but I have never seen them in action. Also their speed for objectives games is a nice touch I wasn't really considering that, but Dreadnoughts can do that whole Str 10 in combat thing...and I know a Venerable Dread will can often eat enough firepower for 2 rhinos.
My opinion, like those stated astutely above, would be to choose the Land Speeders. They will indeed give you an extra unit with which to contest objectives, will be thoroughly more reliable in taking out transports, and based on the rest of your list, will be far more adept at drawing enemy fire from the enemy, as I am sure you know can be used as a spearhead to your army that can initially cause confusion and chaos in the frontlines, while the rest of your army advances towards the middle ground, where objectives may lie, or to utterly crush one flank by adopting the tactic of suppressing fire while still keeping momentum.
The feeling is mutual towards your Drop-Pod Dread. It is going deep into the enemy ranks without any support, and you are essentially conceding a killpoint if you choose to this. A mixture of Drop-Pods and Rhinos can work to effect, however if there is nothing to support one or the other, you have to change your tactics to either just incude either form of transport. Just a thought.
If you are thinking about an assaulting Dreadnaught with a Multi-Melta I woul seriously think against it. A Multi-Melta is not exactly the best weapon to incorporate into an assaulting Dread, as it can only pick out one wound/model at a time, and in terms of combat, you want the best chance to possible in wiping out the entire squad/model. The Space Wolves can handle this fact, but they will not last forever. And including the fact that your Dreadnaught is going in solitarily, this just makes it that much harder.
On the other hand, used correctly Land Speeders can be extremely hard to kill. Being the fact that they are both Fast and a Skimmer, let's look at the stats:
1) Able to fire all weapons at Combat Speed
2) Able to fire one weapon at Cruising Speed
3) Are able to Move Flat Out a maximum of 24"
4) May move over friendly and enemy models
5) When moving Flat Out, Save is defined as Cover Sv, 4+
6) When moving Flat Out, and not immobilised, are hit on 6's in combat
7) When rammed, on a 3+ ram is negated
By far, there are many more things going for our Land Speeders than against, and therefore if you take all of these into account, and use you tactics right, they are lethal. Even better, Land Speeder Typhoons are a menace towards the enemy. Being able to move up to 12" and able to fire their Missiles, making a maximum range of 60" is unbelievably useful. Obviously, there are many more uses for them, but what I had mentioned above is easily the most predominant.
Hope that helps.

Light a fire for a man, and he will be warm for a night. Light a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
If you were dead set on a Dreadnought, IMO an Assault Cannon would be a much better weapon than a Multi Melta. But as has been mentioned, Dreadnoughts are epic-fail if left unsupported. They're essentially two free KP for your opponent, the Venerable Dreadnought is just a more expensive KP. Even with re-rolls, you're looking at maybe two turns of firing. This might work out in your favor some of the time, while others it could bare no impact on the game at all.
For all of the reasons posted above, especially by Hawkuli, the Land Speeders are a far superior choice. I would recommend either three with MM/HB or two Typhoons with HB. In the case of the Typhoons, in addition to what Hawkuli mentioned, they can move 12" (cruising speed) and still fire a) two Krak Missiles, or b) their HB and two Frag Missiles. Their damage potential is simply amazing, and they're altogether much more beneficial than a single sacrificial Dreadnought.
I've recently become a fan of this thing called Dubstep. And you should too.

Thanks for the imput everybody, Land Speeders it is! God Bless this forum lol.
Just a last little aesthetic comment ; I think the land speeders are much better looking models than the venerable dread. the standard and ironclad dreads are lovely models though.

Why 2 Meltas on Ragnar's Grey Hunters in the Land Raider? So they can charge after Melta'ing something and...
You know what, nevermind >_<
Go for the Speeders, you'll probably need them with so little long-range shooting in such a small army.
Thanks for all who commented, land speeders are ordered and on the way. Also, props to you frank on the whole cigarette thing...and the murder thing as well ;P
I did give some consideration to going flamer/melta, giving the wolf guard a combi-melta and upgrading his power weapon to a wolf claw for ragnars squad, but that is 5 more points. and the only thing that i really have to drop is chooser of the slain but that choice will be based off upcoming experience.
