I just got the Battalion Box and I'm taking a look at the spruces at CCS kit, and I am just wondering which items i should use from it...
Since I'm still pretty new to Guard I have absolutely no idea what's useful and what's not, what have you guys used from it that works?
Absolutely no officer steps onto the battlefield without a power fist. It's a steal.
Don't ccw & laspistol your command squads. Lasguns all the way.
(I tried, i really did. It's a waste. It looks cool but they suck. shoot stuff.)
Of course, the melta and plasma will not move away from your army.
Standards, vox and heavy flamer? so-so
Power sword - get a fist.
Grenade launcher and flamers? well, they belong in the infantry squads.
Sniper Rifle? - It just doesn't compliment anything, including lasguns.
medic - it's nice but too expensive, it won't stop your problems and your squad is too small anyway.
I would reccommend against heavy weapons - it makes a 5 man squad a 4 man squad.
The company command have BS4, so some special weapons aren't a bad idea.
The platoon doesn't, so flamers aren't a awful choice.
The best way of astarting guard is with a batallion. The best thing to equip your officer with is unfortunately a chimera.
Popular builds are:
3x plasma and a medic(or 4x plasma)
voxWhat?!?! Its an awful upgrade, when do you want to be in CC? when will a str 6 I1 attack be much use? how is it a steal? its almost useless.Absolutely no officer steps onto the battlefield without a power fist. It's a steal.
I gave my CCS 4 plasma guns...keeps them relatively far away and able to issue orders while still being useful in a fight. Yeah, I do lose some to Gets Hot, but its so damn fun against MEQs and MC, plus it takes good advantaeg of BS4 characteristic of the Vets.
If you want a fluffy squad, the CCS should have an option of having a Standard in one hand, and I made my standard bearer basically tote a plasma gun one-handed... looks badass
You can't have a veteran with a plasma gun AND a standard only one or the other.
For a snip of points you kill the majority of opponents on a 2+. They would get a invunerable save, but obviously no cover or armour. T4 won't instant death, but it's a steal in my opinion. You also get to threaten most vehicles with a unit that wouldn't do much more than run away from them normally.
You drop to init 1? You wouldn't hit first normally anyway.
You can't be picked out in melee with the retinue so you should normally get there.
For IG it's some of the best WS and attacks you have, on a model you can't equip to do much else.
I think it's great You may not win, but you stand a chance, and will whittle down the offending unit in what is probably a bad situation.
I would take it if it was a cheap option... but its just insanely over priced and I would never use it.
I got my dude with a Power fist, sure i doubt i'll never use it, but the big wacker looks awesome lol, couldn't resist... I'll just say it's a ccw and not use the points, for now I'm going to go for a 4 melt chimera build (as soon as i can find a chimy on ebay lol)
as for plasma gun fun... I have an inquisitor as an elite choice re-rolls with 3 plasma guns + a Cannon on bs 4 is totally awesome
If I go for meltas then I always give the officer a fist. A last ditch charge can change a game, and when it comes down to fix bayonets, my officer is glad to have more than a bayonet.
I like 4 snipers and camo. gives a good stay at home unit that can snip off wounds on monstrous creatures and harass the enemy at a good range, not too expensive either.
as staycrunchy says, I don't like giving my commands heavy weapons for wound allocation purposes. leave that to the infantry and vet squad.
platoon command always, always get 4 flamers and a chimera in my lists. they're BS is crap anyway, and 4 flamers is too good to pass up. at full strength firing out the chimera i average 15-20 hits. then the chimera has a turret heavy flamer to get anything that's left.
Welcome to the Guard
P.S. never, ever, ever, ever give the platoon command a standard. I see some newer people do it, and its a waste of points (I don't say that often too). +1 combat res on a 5 man guard unit isn't going to help, if they survive an assault it would be the 1 straggler who just loves to get in the way of your own guns. just let the bugger be cut down and run away so you can shoot the enemy.

Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
