Well I'm really debating whether or not to play IG or Tau? I know this is so stupid to ask but how are the two armies different. I mean they both are the top armies for shooting but I really don't see the difference besides IG having the pie plates of doom. Dang thinking about that makes me wanna drool.
"Are farts supposed to be lumpy?"
Personally I find IG much more fun to play then Tau, bc IG stand a better chance in CC, and they don't need to tun, plus u can ally in Deamon Hunters.

<span style='color:red'>Blood God's Initiate</span></span>
I disagree I think that tau are much better then Ig. First of all the have better long range weapons. Not to mention they have a better save. They last a lot longer than imperial guard. (except in close combat, but then again that is why you should have kroot)
Its all about your preference, they are both good armies that are fun to play....
BOTHS' standard troops suck in CC, it doesnt really matter that guardsmen are slightly better off in it than the Tau, because chances are, either way your going to get slaughtered, unless ofcoarse your playing IG VS tau, in which case it wont matter anyway since niether side is going to assault the other in all probability.
So its basically down to who shoots better, which isnt really a question to me, the tau - pound for pound are better, they have the nicer stats, weapon wise, and still dont cost much more than gaurdsmen. The IG just have access to some really great HS, such as the workhorse leman russ. Its really just which you like, both are great armies, IG your going to have more option on what your units look like, what type of units your going to field, which race of IG(cadians, catachans, etc.)
Personally i love the sleek, clean angular look of the Tau, but theres also some really sexy lookin IG units, so basically, either pick up their codex's and read through and see if one strikes you over the other, if not... do what i did
flip a coin
IG can outrange tau w/ our 72in battle cannon, and our 360in earthshaker. Ig also gets heavy weapon squads which mean a squad comprised soley of heavy bolters (OOOOHHHH) and missle launchers (AAAHHHHHH), to lascannons, autocannons, even mortars. IG outnumber the tau due to relatively low point cost. IG gets doctrines if you wish, plus they can ally with the different ordos. and IG can actually win in close combat when properly tooled. so lets compare the two. IG beats tau in close combat. IG beats tau in shooting. IG beats tau in numbers. IG beats tau in alternative army organizations (doctrines). IG has more guns, and who needs a railgun when you have an earthshaker? i think my post leans towards IG...
better long range weapons???? what Railgun? ok... and what else? 30" pulse rifle?....?Originally posted by The Ham@Sep 16 2004, 16:26

we have something i fondly call a "Bassie" it can fire 240" indirectly.
BattleCannon same range as Railgun only its anti personal.
and of course Heavy Bolters, Autocannons, Mortars, Lascannon, Missle Launchers, etc all that out range 30" pulse rifle. and we have alot of them.
true, FW have 4+ save. but we like cover. and for a couple more points we can have 4+ saves.
now i'm not saying IG are better than Tau. but i am saying, in a sraight up shoot-out, IG have the advantage.
However! Tau *excel* in mobility. that is their biggest advantage, *mobile firepower*. IG are static (primarly) firepower that rely on attrition and "shock and awe" to win. Tau can't rely on soaking large amounts of casulites. it would cripple them to loose half as many guys that an IG general laughs at.
both are fun, dynamic, challenging armies to use. I prefer IG, but Tau are very cool.
When I play a game, its usually only 48" long. This means fire warriors can shoot across most of the board and all those 1000" monstrosities IG have suddenly dont have the advantage. An IG player I know has 5 or 6 tanks in a 1500 pt list. I can take 4 railguns, meaning all your precious ordance will die after only 2 turns. The basic Tau gun wounds guard on a 2+, meaning you stand essentially no chance of winning with your guardsmen alone.
Hive Fleet Furi Kuri 32/21/4
Tomb Kings: 8/5/2
Im in ur Halo, killin ur covernantz
Both armies are nice. IG has alot of number and a full list of options. Second we have alot of Ld based upgrades that keep us on the table.
TAU have really nice guns and a decent save. They cant rack up the same amount of guys on the table but its good enough for there 30" basic weapon.
Both are great to play but I prefer IG based on models, fluff, and style.

how long do you think those 4 broadsides will last with lascannons (autocannons taking out drones) shooting at them (no screening)?
true, FW are stronger than guardsmen. but since i can get almost twice as many guardsmen on the table. and FW still only have BS3. besides, it's not that lasguns that do the damage, it's the HW.
30" pulse rifle is nice. but your not going to be in range on turn one. unlike IGs HWs your going to have to hoof it for at least a turn. two if i play smart.
railgun can't hit a bassie when it's out of LOS.
both are good armies. Tau have to use mobility, cause like i said, IG will win in a straight up shoot out.
yeah i sappose your right, i just like the fact that, BOTH have GREAAATT firepower, but the tau can do it zippin around the table, and IG are like that fat guy you pick on during lunch, he cant run and catch you, but if he does get you in his range, your F*cked(duno where that one came from  ). I acually had a really tough time deciding between IG and Tau, i went with Tau in the end because i didnt feel like spended all the money you need to for a good IG army(its all insanely priced as-is, but i dont have the money to buy 20 HW teams at 30 bucks for 10 bucks a pop). Plus the IG require a lot more paints, wayyyy more models to be purchased, including pricey tanks. I love them both but, i just opted for the Tau for the clean, angular looks, and the more economic collection process
