Hello all! As you can see, I'm new to these forums, but I'm not necessarily new to 40k. I have a very large nid army that has been my baby for some time now, but I'm ready to expand. I work part time at a game store in addition to my full job, so I got a great discount [read: Near wholesale value] on a decent sized group of space marines. Seeing as I have next-to-no experience with marines, I want your help deciding what to purchase next.
What I Have:
4 Tactical Squads*
2 Assault Squads
2 Terminator Squads
1 Devastator Squad
1 Drop Pod
1 Ironclad Dreadnought
*A friend of mine at the game shop gave me an old tactical squad and a rhino. The squad has a sergeant with power fist and bolt pistol, one marine with plasma gun, one marine with missile launcher, and seven with bolters. The Rhino is just a plain old 'nilla right now. Everything else is still in box, sealed and all, so I can configure any variants or weapon arrangements if it influences what you think I need.
-I am looking to make a balanced army, but if I lean one way, it would likely be shootey. I already have a melee hoard army.
-I plan to play a vanilla/traits army with my own chapter, the Sons of Faith. However, I will be choosing traits to fit my army/play style, not the other way around, so if you have any traits to suggest, I'm all ears.
So basically, I know I have a pretty damn good start, and I'm not looking to get a specific army build from any of you, so I'm not establishing points, as we use different point values nearly every day in games at the shop. What I want, is advice on what to buy next.
I feel like I'm lacking in armor, but maybe I don't need that if I just equip a squad as tank hunters? Also, I know I need a command unit, but I'm not sure what to go with for now, suggestions?
Thank you very much, and if I posted this in the wrong place, I apologize. I figured it didn't go into army lists since I am neither posting a specific build, nor asking for one.
Thanks for any and all help.
Sons of Faith
Well the only real way to get traits anymore is to take the different Special Characters. Such as Khan of the White Scars, Vulkan of the Salamanders, etc.
The next couple things I would buy if I had your models would be rhino's and/or razorbacks for transports for your troops, and maybe some sternguard.
Vindicators are awesome choices too.
You cant really go wrong with a Captain with a relic blade leading your force

"I am the architect of fate!"
from your reference of traits and also tank hunters it sounds as though you've been reading the old codex, the first thing you should do before buying more stuff is to have a good long read through the new codex.
Bike squads. Powerfist for the sergeant, max out on multi meltas (attack bikes) and meltaguns. And welcome to LO, NovaMeltdown.
Jager bombs. Very efficient at wiping out friend or foe.
Whoa! You are right Atyeo. I actually own both the 4th and 5th Ed. books, because my gaming group likes to play with both. I hadn't even read 5th yet and was working under the assumption it would be the same. Thanks for pointing it out.
So, based on the suggestions, I think my next purchase will be the Pedro Kantor model and a Sternguard. I'll convert him and strip away the Crimson Fist icons and all that fun stuff. Next off will be another Rhino or two.
Next will be maybe two Vindicators, followed by a bike squad or two to get that in the mix.
I understand that this is a random assortment, but I'm trying to give myself options for any scenario I might play in. Thanks for all your help guys.
Any comments on Kantor? As far as HQs go, he seems to pack a pretty decent bang for his points, at least to me. If you think a different choice would be better, please say so.
Welcome to LO.
Pedro's got some nice stuff. If you're going to go heavy on the Sternguard, you can actually just enhance 1 of the tactical squads, with extra heraldry, or minor weapon mods, and you can have a full Sternguard squad. I prefer the plastic models to the metal ones currently available.
Thanks for the tip. It will be nice to save some money by converting one of the tac squads, since I don't really need four 10 man tac squads. I also thought about getting [eventually] a Chief Librarian Tigurius model and converting him to Sons of Faith. The ability to bring in 3 powers could definitely come in handy, but if anyone has any thoughts on him, how useful he is, etc. please speak up.
Tigurius has got some useful abilities, but the Vanilla codex psychic powers are a bit limited compared to some of the other marine codexes (in my opinion). Pedro's a badass in general - he's obviously good in Sternguard armies, but he works plenty well even in lists that use little or no sternguard. (Read his other abilities)
The thing to remember is that when you convert your tacticals to sternguard, you should probably paint them up so that they're visibly quite different. If you're a fluff buffy, you could paint them as Deathwatch Marines - it's fairly common there, as the fluff fits the rules quite nicely.
The only major thing you need is fire support, really. The vindicators that somebody mentioned are an excellent choice, especially when fielded in multiples. Land Speeders work well too, especially the 5th ed Typhoon Launchers. Bike armies are a solid build, but I've found a bike-style list to be a bit of an all-or-nothing affair.
If you plan on playing 1500 point +, pimp the devastators out. If you have a spare 15 points, spend it on another heavy weapon. I have a 2300 point SM army and 2 devastator squads, both with 2 lascannons, a plasma cannon and a multi melta, and a sergeant with a plasma gun. The devastators play a big part in my army, tearing holes in the enemy lines before he knows what hit him. But thats just me
I feel obliged to point out that a Devastator squad can only have 4 heavy weapons. :p
