Hey everyone! I signed up to this forum yesterday and have had a blast reading. Anyway, I call upon the eternal wisdom of Imperial Guard Veterans! Some advice on "what-to-do- next" would be appreciated. Yes, I know you've done this millions of times, but there will always be another noob. I do have the Imperial Guard Book, kinda now how to play yet have never read the actual, move, assult, rules... but I DO know how an army list works.
- IG Battleforce (New one) which has: Command Squad, 3 Heavy Weapon Teams, 1 sentinel, and 15-20 Guardsmen
- 1 sprue of Guardsmen purchased on sale
- Demolisher/Punisher/Executioner Leman Russ
As you can see, it is a decent start, but what do I need next? I was thinking a Valkyire/Vendetta boxed set, New Leman Russ boxed set, 1 more box of Cadian Shocktroopers, 1-2 more sentinels, 1 more heavy weapons squad, 1 Space Marine Scout boxed set. And in the future, treat myself to a Forge World Thunderbolt
My reasoning is, " I like to game, but creating great looking models on great looking boards is a big part too me. And I like fluff, alot of fluff. Valkyire would be turned into a Vendetta, the SM scouts would be used to make veterans (shotties), and all the others is self explanatory.
So, which should I get? I have about 50-70 dollars a month as standard. Certain situations can add or detract from that. Please advice!
The list I have till now is:
Company Command Squad:85
AC, 2 grenade launchers (sargeant w/ power weapon)
HB, 2 grenade launchers (Sargeant w/ powerfist and bolt pistol)
Armoured Sentinel withAC :60
Leman Russ Demolisher w/ hull heavy flamer:165
Total: 512 Points

Best bet would be to make a list first. You're off to a good start, but before you start hearing what everyone says is good, you should determine a general group of units that you want to play with, that way you can start off focused.
Yeah, post up a list, possibly a building blocks list with 500pts, then 1000pts, maybe add in a 750 mark. The problem with the 750 is you're increasing the chance of buyin g models you wont use later on.
But a good addition would always be a second battleforce, you will need more infantry and special weapons from the command squad are always in high demand. Even if you dont use one part of the set you will be getting basically a 4 for the price of 3 deal with battle forces.

Back to the main topic though: My question is do you have the Imperial Guard Codex? For all I know you probably do its just you did not mention that you did or did not possess the codex in your thread. Apart from that I would say that you should start with a small list. Preferably, 500 to 1000 points and see how your army plays. Get the feel of how the army is run and find your own unique playing style with IG.
As others have said, it depends on your list. But I would focus on buying 2-3 Chimeras next. That will let you mech up your command and vet squads. Get used to that and you'll be able to proceed with either a full-mech or hybrid infantry/mech list.
As a disclamer: Both me and Sandwyrm are, as far as I know, Hybrid list junkies.
A second Battleforce is a good idea. That would give you 50 total Guardsmen and two command squads, enough for a platoon blob squad and a couple Veteran squads for the 1,000-points level. The extra HW bases will give you the ability to swap weapons around and you'll have a nice Sentinel squadron, too (which is easy to sell or trade if you decide they're not your style; plenty of Guardsmen love them). Rather than spend money on the special weapons blisters, you may want to order some plasma & meltagun sprues as a bits order. It's a straightforward conversion (I recall the plasmaguns comes with Marine hands attached?) and will save you some cash.
Tankwise, you will want/need at least one Chimera right away and you may as well budget for two, as SandWyrm suggested. Redundancy is important in the Guard, since we rely more on quantity than quality.
After that, you'll have a little space with which to proxy in order to get a feel for what fits your style. Hellhounds, skimmers, Russes and artillery are all fun and useful units.

I guees I should mention I prefer to play in Cities of Death, or atleast with high amounts of terrain. My opponents don't care. Should I get a Valk? and yeah, a second battlefroce sounds very good.
