Hi folks, quick painting/modeling question.
I'd like to use veteran squads without buying the metal Karskin models. To identify a particular squad of infantry as veterans, is it simply enough to paint them slightly different (in addition to still putting the correct weapons on the models)?
My other thought is that I have several of the bald marine seargent heads... I could just use the cadian models with the marine heads on them?
I'm just curious what would be an easy way to distinguish a veteran squad from a normal infantry squad.
Thanks in advance for your help and guidance.
Just about anything that visually sets Veterans apart from from the rank & file will suffice. Your head swap and different-painting ideas are both valid methods. A third would be to load Veterans up with all the extra bits you have lying around. My own method is Cadians for Veterans and Catachans for grunts.

Camo on Vets, plain colors on platoon scrubs. Works for me.

I'll actually end up with three groups of vets (2-3 squads per group) in the end - for my Inquisitorial retinues, Airborne troops, and 'normal' veterans. These are being met by converted Mordians (Mordians with heads replaced with WW2 german helmets), Elysians, and decked-out Cadians respectively.
The cadians are loaded with extra pouches, bergens, bare or distinctive heads, and other detail from the FW Cadian Upgrade pack and some of the bitz from the cadian command sprue. I also had a few old bits lying around, such as an auspex, so I gave that to them. They'll probably have the same basic colour scheme as the rest of the army, but with more wear and tear, such as damage to armour, scorch marks, injuries, and general grime.
My veterans have some catachan bits, some fancy stuff from command squad and have some other random bits.
I'll need to make a second squad now but I have run out of catachan bits.
Marine heads will not fit very well on Cadians.

I was worried you might say that about the marine heads. Great ideas all around, thanks everyone for the input.
Check out forge world, they do packs which have hardened veterans bits and bobs for variety in heads etc. I also grabbed some of the cadian resperator heads for use on me drop troops
I agree with cKerensky. Elysians are the best way to go. From the moment I bought them, I have loved the models to death, and they look awesome.
