I am normally not a Marine player but i am planning on a conversion project for a "terminator army" probably using SW rules.
I have a question though. The army will be dragon themed, like dragonscales n stuff and i am planning on making tiny dragon wings on their face like the "Honor Guard" has eagle wings on their cheeks. I have some sketches attached.
There is one problem though, since the terminator armor is so confined. When the wing is added the can hardly ever turn. A few degrees maybe. I know terminator armors arent the most "agile" armors, its more like a metal wall but I wonder what SM players think about this.
How much do you think would a terminator armor "head" will be able to turn and what is the minimum acceptable movement?
P.S.: First of all, I hope this is the right place for this question.

Maybe do some cut-outs in the wings, so that they can still turn their heads? I don't think it matters too much tbh, as a squad of termies will all be looking around for each other anyhow. Remember they can't turn as far as normal SM's can to begin with. Maybe 50 or 60 degrees at best.
It's probably not a huge deal so long as the models look pretty. Have you seen some of the winged Blood Angels shoulderpads? You can't wear them and a jump pack at the same time and still move your arms. The Sanguinary Guard get this problem a lot because their death masks have these huge obstructive halos that don't really fit on their shoulders and clash with their jump packs.
If you're worried about every Terminator facing directly ahead instead of looking around (which is important, as any modeller can tell you that the orientation of the head determines the "direction" of the model) the best I can say is to customise the helmets so that some can look this way, and some can look that way, and do your best on a model-by-model basis. Getting the head wrong can really stuff up a model...so no pressure

I would guess about 60' movement, so 30 degrees each way. not much, and if it looks pretty don't break into a sweat. How you doing it? dark elf bits? High elf dragon ears? cocktail sticks and tin foil? (or, seriously tissue and doping agent, and maybe coctail sticks?)
I guess i can model some with wings and some with horns, and all would have the "mouth". The SS wielding can be have wings for example as if they are a wall blah blah.
Cocktail stick would be too thick , I was planning on using 3 pieces of straight paper clip or maybe some metal rod even thinner, then rolling some extra thin GS on powder and putting them on the rod trio like a topside of a tent. Then press a little on the middle parts to create the "bent" dragon wing look. Even though i tried the metal rod which works, i havent tried the GS yet. I am not very experience with GS so this will take me a lot of tries.
Tin foil sounds like a great idea but wouldnt it be too fragile?
No more fragile than the gs, but i would recommend tissue and doping agent (like you would get for making rc balsa planes) it's quite strong
I dont know where to dope really,
but maybe i can use really thin tissue, glue it with CA to the "rods" and dip it to highly watered down PVA.
and maybe even coat it with CA after (i did it with my tyranid tervigon sack, made out of tissue, gypsum. trust me it works. Its hard like a rock)
This process should be easier, faster and less frustrating than GS hopefully.
Thanks stayscrunchyinmilk for the heads up
i like your sketches, seriously, your gonna have a unique and admirable army that way, go for it,
for the head movement, well, Terminators are fine with having a "tunnel"-sight, aslong as they can see straight ahead they can see something to kill so their happy!
if i can suggest you something, i saw alot of dragon like wings on Dark Elf models from WHF, maybe their to big for the terminator heads but maybe you can use them for vehicles or important dudes?
much luck with creating your new army!
(finally some marine player that does not go with the "HURRR DURRR! i can win with BA! DURRR!"-wave! *thumbs up*)

I don't think there will be much of a problem, concerning how their head will move. Most pictures have the terminator turning at the waist, which suggests the helmet is "fixed".
However, the plastic termies show more movement than the stoic metals, which suggests more movement with the helmets. I still believe there isn't much of a problem.
Post some pics when you have slapped the dragon wingguard on. Love to see how it looks off the paper.
I m back in town at least. Read all the comments and i thank everyone for the support and information.
Swordcommander - first of all thank you, then i looked at the Dark elf bits, most dragon wings are on metal pieces (like hq etc.) BUT i have seen some shield ornaments sold from GW and from bits stores alike, its a skull with a wing on it. I believe that could be used.
http://www.bitsandkits.co.uk/dark-el...-b-p-3847.html (this might even work on helmets -maybe-)
Leapinglizard - I would love to post some pics when i progress some, but sadly i have to admit it progresses REALLY SLOW. The idea got its shape (such as the sketches) around april-may and look where i am now I could only cut 1 terminator head and did same "fake" test fit.
I will post some pictures right away when i progress a little bit. The first thing i will work on is the helmet. I also have some shoulder ideas. I am planning on making "dragon wings" stick out of the should pad, not lie down on it like the BA wings. Alsa there will be random batches of "dragonscale armor" coating on the models along with some spikes.
I will post some pictures or sketches as i come up with them. I will have to "necro post" alot
Thanks again for the support.
Edit: I have also found these from the high elves
- http://www.bitsandkits.co.uk/high-el...ar-p-2104.html : Can be used on top of land raiders as an ornament?
These 2 are almost the same but there are slight differences. The wings seem to be too big but might be of use.
