I play using the BA rules, last week got my butt kicked by a Salamanders army. The major source of my pain is my years away from the game and his Assault Terminators. Did not realized they could pack that much punch, I always saw them as a waste of points in 3E. My question is what would be my best solution keeping in mind it is a squad of 5 all armed with Thunder Hammers and Shields? I was thinking my best bet would be a large squad of Sanguinary Guard or just getting my own squad of Assault Terms to go toe-to-toe with them. What do you think my best bet would be or do you have any other suggestions?
Hey man. I play sallies with a 5 man assault terminator squad and heres what I usually run, and how they usually die
They are almost always in a Land Raider Redeemer. Now you're either going to find them in this tank, or a LRC but either way, they games when my termies do nothing as when the Land Raider dies or gets immobolized first turn. So if this is the case, make sure you try to take it out before they go 12", disembark 2" and charge 6".
If the termies are out already, and you have a chance to shoot at them, making them take a ton of saves is the way to go. Now sometimes I get dirt lucky and make like 20 saves on 5 guys without loosing one, but generally my terminators die to just sheer amounts of saves.
In combat, you want something with a good punch that goes at a higher iniative. So yes, your Sanguanry Guard are a good choice, specially cause it takes away the 2+ save. Death Company could also do the trick but you would need to just get a TON of wounds which you should be able to do re-rolling to hits and to wounds with a chaplain. There is also a chance that a Death Company Dreadnought with Blood Talons could do the trick, but you risk being smacked back.

their actually doesn't exist a perfect way of killing them easily,
just keep shooting at them like the guy above me said, it's the best way, 'nuff said
but no realy, just try to counter them early, they have 2+ armour save and 3+ invurnable save so DO NOT waste your high AP weapons on them, low AP and many shot weapons are the key, like heavy bolters, assault cannons or just massive bolter fire.

I've never had a problem with terminators before. I've always relied primarily on mass regular firepower to deal with terminators, occasionally, with a low AP shot thrown in. So, weather or not they have storm shields makes almost no difference.
In CC, its large numbers of normal attacks (I play Space Wolves, so this part may not apply to you)
Terminator squads, storm shield or no, are just a non issue. In fact, when fielded against my army, they're a bit of a points sink.
Anyways, like it was already said, mass firepower is your answer
Volume of fire usually is the best method for dropping them, but as BA we have issues bringing a bunch of firepower to bear. With that in mind we do have options available to us.
A simple 10 man assault squad with a power sword and two meltaguns averages 2 dead with 2 casualties taken on the charge. ~3 if you get furious assault with 1.6 casualties. Then one more dead with 1-2 more casualties round 2. Etc. A ten man assault squad on the charge will stand a good chance at taking them over a couple of rounds of combat.
A 10 man assault squad with power sword/ plasma pistol and two plasma guns will usually win by dropping in rapid firing, and then getting charged.
Lightning claw terminators with preferred enemy from a librarian or chaplain will do the trick.
10 man DC with a pair of powerweapons will destroy a 5 man squad without much trouble, maybe even in a round if they are accompanied by a chaplain.
A librarian with fear of darkness has a chance if they are outside of their transport.
Dirt cheap plasma cannon devastators could help, though not reliably. (This is a supporting choice to soften them).
To drop them as quickly as possible hit them with one or more of the above supported by ANYTHING.
I can testify that Sang Guard work well. Just make sure you get at least 2 squads (10 SGs), on them at once with a priest nearby for furious charge.
The other method, as others have posted, is throwing mass shots at them to make them roll more saves than they can make.

Thanks for the input. Ill keep the sheer fire power strategy in mind for next time. If that does not work Ill invest in some more DC with a Chaplain.
Oh yeah, we were doing a spearhead annihilation mission and he dropped them in on my left flank via a drop pod.
