Hey there guys! I was wondering what you guys think of putting 1 ogryn bone head and 5 ogryns into a Chimera and then rushing it forward to an enemy infantry unti? I have been thinking of having a Squad of Vets with flamers and shotties in a vendetta, another squad of Vets with Lascannon/missile launcher, meltaguns and the demolitions rule in another Chimera, and lastly the Ogryns from above.
Yes I know this isnt a full army list, but the question is, "What do you think of this 3 pronged spearhead?" Vendetta drops of the Flamer/shotty vets on top of an enemy unit with lots of infantry (orks, nids, even SM), the Chimelta is self explanatory, charge beside enemy armour, if imoblized they still have melta bombs and 1 demo charge (plus 3 meltas). And the Ogryns charge either in unision with the Vendetta vets or by itself against another unit of infantry.
Yes the rest of my army would have armor, a comand squad, 1 troops squad to lay down the heavy fire, sentinels, demolisher, etc etc.
Please let me know!
P.S. Obviously this 3 pronged spear is extremely aggresive. To reach objectives first, maybe, but to kick the enemies sorry arse out of there actually.
You can't move and then assault from a transport so you'd have to spend a turn looking sheepishly into the enemy's face. I think that'd be asking for trouble. Ideally you want to be using your speed to concentrate fire onto one enemy squad at a time and eradicate them.
Well, You are right, but it ain't all about CC, especially for IG. I am just suggesting close firefight,, the next turn you can mop up, either in CC with the ogryns or with everyone shooting, again.
Using your mobility for close ranged shooting is fine but just use better units. Vet squads lay out the hurt more quickly and more cheaply. 3 plas will easily outpace the ripper guns vs MEQs, while vs swarms you can dismount and unload a ton of lasgun fire into them with FRF SRF - or let them get close and apply multiple flame templates with your hull heavy flamers/hellhound.
Lol, ogryns are the only non squishy infantry in IG and I didn't like the lascannon in the vet squad either, I was just emphazizing an armor hunting role.
If there's one thing I noticed, it's that putting Ogryn into a chimera tends to be a bad (and expensive) idea. With only ld 7, you stand a very good chance of them getting pinned should their ride get popped, and it inevitably will. If you want my suggestion, footslogging about six of them would be more worth it. They're more likely to claim cover, and you can expect them to easily draw heavy weapons fire away from your precious and plentiful armor once they start getting too close for comfort.
As Axle_Gear pointed out, the real trick to using Ogryns well is getting around their dismal leadership, which is low enough that being stubborn is actually ineffective. You could field an Ogryn-filled Chimera alongside a CCS Chimera with a regimental standard, as a sort of outrigger/countercharger. The only feasible alternative is dropping the CCS for a Lord Commissar or Primaris Psyker and giving him the Ogryn as a bodyguard.
The Primaris should work well so long as close combat isn't their primary focus. Plenty of dakka from that squad!
