i have the bitz for 3 more guys to add to my squad of 7 and i was wondering if i should make two seperate squads instead. any advice would be helpful
Vanilla Marine Army 1000 PTs W0/D0/L2
Space Marine Combat Patrol W0/D1/L0
In a drop pod army you want a squad of ten then combat-squad when they leave the drop-pod.
In a mech army:
Pros of 2 squads of 5
Can split fire
Can take two transports
Can take two powerfists
More kill-points on offer
Take up 2 elite slots
Pros of 1 squad of ten
Support each other: more punch on the alpha strike and if your transport gets destroyed they are all travelling at the same pace.
Option to combat-squad if its suitable. (objective games against assualt armies)
Can all travel in a rhino.
Only take up one elite slot
Easier target and less firepower.
Don't run a footslogging army.
In summary, two squads of 5 is more versatile and has more firepower, but comes at the cost of an extra elite slot, points spent on another powerfist and transport and can be split up. It really depends on the rest of the list.
Hope this helps.
p.s. if you magnetise one of the powerfists you can play them as either until you establish witch you prefer.
I would stick with 1 ten man unit. Im running a 5 man at the moment, and they dont get to live very long unfortunately, so if you running 10 you get the extra wounds plus 20 poisoned shots, or what ever else you need to poor into something. Also leaving you open to take other Elite squads.
A single squad of ten models in a drop pod.
Sergeant with a power fist, and as many melta weapons I can afford ( 2 meltaguns & X combi-meltas ).
This is more than enough for my needs.
I run 'em in squads of 10. Power Fist, 2 Hvy Flamers and 4 Combi-meltas in a pod. Got 2 of those. Leaving 1 last Elite slot for something else I may need, or not =)
