Hi guys. not played for about 10 years, looking to get back into it.
Chose Salamanders as the fluff sounds good. Not too sure how they'll be on the table considering lack of speed etc.
Vulcan He’stan ('cause his special rules look wicked)
4 x Squad 10 Marines
Squad 1: 1 flamer, 1 combi-flamer, 1 multi-melta,
1 x Dedicated Razorback.
Squad 2: 1 flamer, 1 combi-melta, 1 missile launcher, Razorback.
2 x Venerable Dreadnaughts: H.Flamer, Multi-melta & extra armour
1 x Terminator Assault Squad: 1 x 5 Terminators with Thunder Hammers & Storm Shields.
1 x Dedicated Landraider Redeemer, w/ multi melta & extra armour
1 x Whirlwind.
1 x Devastator Squad: 1 x power fist, 1 x lascannon, 1 x multi-melta.
The idea is:
Stick He'Stan in with the Terms to unleash fury.
Dreads have extra armour and will walk so to take fire away from the LandRaider and it's package.
Whirlwind & Devastators will fire at stuff until dreads, terms & troops are close enough for combat.
Troops will be split down to Combats depending on the objective.
Let me know your thoughts. My maths may well be wrong!

Well, the list looks pretty good; I run a fairly similar one. Real quick though, it's against Forum rules and GW Intellectual Property rights to post the points cost for a given unit/piece of wargear, etc. So you'll probably want to edit out Vulkan's and the Whirlwind's point cost.
As for the list itself, it looks pretty solid. There are only two points that I would make changes.
1. I don't care for Venerable Dreadnoughts. I think that they are way over-costed for what they do. Where it me, I would drop the venerable upgrades on both and take a third dreadnought with Heavy Flamer. However, I also see what you're trying to do with them, so it's not a bad idea to leave them venerable; I just don't care for them.
2. I would vary your loadout for the Devastators. While both the Las Cannon and the Multi-Melta are both anti-tank weapons, they have so vastly different ranges that your squad will almost never be at optimum performance. In my opinion, Multi-Meltas are the weakest of the Devastator weapons. I would recommend either Missile Launchers or Plasma Cannons. That being said, it looks like you just might be limited by what models you have. But what if you were to put the missile launcher in the Devastator squad and the 2nd multi-melta into the tactical squad?
Anyways, on the whole it is a good list. I pretty frequently run a similar one at 1500 points. Best of luck!
Hello lippy, welcome back to the hobby!
I hope this was helpful. Good luck.

Ditch the devastators entirely for 2-3 MM armed attack bikes. They have better tank killing ability being twin linked and much more able to get into range. They can move & fire unlike devastators and even turboboost.
Quorn! - Protein for the Protein God.
Cheers guys, all very helpful!
Have edited the post to suit Rules. Can't be dealing with a lawsuit! (oops!)
If I'm perfectly honest (and I hope this won't annoy anyone) I chose Venerable Dreads purely on the basis that: I have spare points, what can I upgrade? Venerable Dreadnaughts sound more posh than Dreadnaughts... the cost more points? They must be better! lol I'd rather not drop pod them as like I said I want them to walk and take fire away from the LRR.
Handing the Devastators a Lascannon & a MM was purely because I wanted a 'fluffy' MM but figured a lascannon could do some damage until I find where they should fit on the table. But I guess giving them a Missile Launcher instead would be more effective thinking about it.
Power weapons / fists on the Sergeants sound pretty much standard and something I overlooked.
Saying 4 x tac squads was a typo from a 2000pt army list I made and forgot to change.
So I will be using 2 tac squads, with 2 razors. If I do Combat one then they'd probably babysit my whirlwind and fire a missile launcher.
Regarding a couple of vindicators instead of my dreads, would these prove to be more assistance in general?
and Finally! When I said I 'used to play' I meant I collected and painted imperial guard. Probably played one or two games but only roughly to the rules.
As I want to create an army that goes with the story, and so is true to it's legend...
Where/how do you go about getting all the extra weapons (ie Multimeltas for Tac Squads) etc. Do they come with the boxes? or am I going to have to by a unit that i'll never build, purely because there's a sprue with a particular weapon on it?
Oh yeah, and regarding the bikes. They do sound a real good option, and something i'd probably prefer. But I don't think they fit under the Salamanders' banner. Or do they?
Lippy, In regards to your question about the usefulness of Vidicators vs Venerable Dreads, I would say that the Vindi is probably the better bet. They are much less precise, but they have a tendancy to scare the pants off your opponent. While the Ven Dread is certainly good, the Vindi will draw more fire away from your LR because a St 10 pie plate scares everyone. And it's cheaper. For the cost of your two Ven Dreads you could get three Vindis with Seige Sheilds. The Three pie plates will be way more effective.
On the topic of Bikes, yes, to a certain extent they are un-fluffy. But an Attack Bike I feel would be the exception. Salamanders love their Multi-Meltas and I challenge you to find a better delivery system for a melta weapon in the whole game. And the Salamanders still have Bike squads, Land Speeders, and Assault Marines just like other chapters, they just have fewer of them.
One more concideration is that, if you take my above suggestion and swap out the Dreads for Vindis, you will not have enough HS slots for the Vindis, a Whirlwind, and Devastator squad. I would say jsut drop the Devastators because they are so over-costed. Use the points saved there and from the Dreads to maybe get another Tac squad, a Rifleman Dread to help bust transports, or something. But the Devs are just so over-costed in this codex it's rediculous.
