I gotta ask why so many people find the Exterminator to be a waste of points. I decided to build one just because I thought it was cool and after the last couple games I've realized how useful it really is. The last game I played was against Space Marines and it killed 3 tactical squads and routed a devastator squad.
Based on my recent experiences, I believe the Exterminator to be an excellent addition to an IG battle line, but I want to see what other people say about this and based on their own experiences.
You sure you have the right tank there? Exterminator is the one with autocannons. If you did that much damage to marines with it you are very, very, very lucky.
Exterminators aren't bad at all. Other options simply field more firepower and fill the same role for fewer points so it isn't that commonly used. In certain builds it is a great thing to have, in most others, not so much.
It is not that it is a bad tank really. When it comes down to it, it is more about preference. I personally prefer the LRBT over it due to the fact that it is higher str, lower ap, greater range, and a Large Blast weapon. This has proved more invaluable to me time after time. I have used the LRBT against SM many times, and when its hit, it has generally wiped out atleast half of a tact squad.
An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded...
I think the main role of the Exterminator would be to pop light/med. tanks and MCs while on the move. The main issue with this is that the IG already have alot that can fill that role at a lower cost. Some examples, if you want to destroy tanks while on the move, Vendettas. If you want to shoot at the MCs heading your way 2 Hydras will give you twice the shots with a longer range at a lower cost. But it still is a cool tank. :-)
The main advantages that I can see to the Exterminator over the Hydra are: 1) You can buy the kit for it w/o having to pay forge world prices. 2) I can move and still fire 4 shots plus its hull weapon. 3) It is more durable and can take some decent hits before going boom. 4) It can benefit from the Pask upgrade.
All of that said, most people will tell you that the hydra is a better buy for the points, and it is hard to argue otherwise. Even so, there are some roles that a Russ is better suited to.
Praise the Emperor and pass the promethium!
If you don't have Vendettas or autocannon sentinels, then an Extermintor is probably the best ranged anti-transport that can still stay mobile.
The best use of all for an Exterminator is finishing off the last model or two in a squad devastated by your big templates. Nothing is more frustrating (for me) than to lose the game because two or three last Marines standing are cowering out of lasgun range, and they're actually more likely to die from an Exterminator autocannon than a battlecannon at that point. (Cover saves, BC only does one wound per model max, etc.)

Right now I'm using both Vendettas and Exterminators in 2K games.
The Exterminators are useful because I believe in always moving my tanks. Having to baby-sit static Hydras just isn't my style. Their durability is also nice because it ensures I'll have some long range anti-tank available in the last few turns of the game.

Just played another game last night against a fellow IG player who had a mech list. My Exterminator popped two of his chimeras and immobilized his manticore before it was finally taken down by a heavy weapons squad with lascannons.
