So lately ive been playing around with the idea of picking up the new codex and making a new "chapter" of my own for marines. The idea of set upon and after mass research of other chapters have found a couple that are also close to this idea is a chapter put together by outcast, those left behind, marines that are loyal to the emperor and to the people but not to the empire itself (if that makes sense to people). I have models that I have sitting around that are part of my dark angels and were just left overs of when I first started marines years ago and free things i was given or traded. The basic idea is they are marines of the people and scavengers. They have no issue with taking and using chaos weapons or tau weapons etc as long as its for the good of the people they are defending (this would be represented with bits and pieces I have). Im looking at getting more scouts then marines as far as troops since scout armor would be easier to both make or get then power armor. I would like to hear your opinions and ideas on this. I also will be including a pole to help me pick out of the names of thought up.
current models for this army:
8 Assault marines
10 space marines
1 company master
and 10 khorne Beserkers (I dont use them in chaos and it would help the point of using chaos marine items)
This doesn't really seem to work. If they still fight for the Emperor, and fight for his people...they'll be fighting for the empire if they like it or not. It seems to me that you're taking what you have laying around and are trying to make something of it. It's not a bad idea by any means, but would suggest trying something different.
Also a thought, if they would start using chaotic weaponry the Inquisition would hop on them in a heartbeat and any idea that they aren't for the empire wouldn't help that at all.

i agree with Emysk, you could get the old bolter patterns from FW and use them, representing the fact that the are a very old chapter, and maybe use a colour scheme from one of the older chapters or make your own.
maybe even keep them in the DA colour scheme, since the DA are(were) the protectors of the people of Caliban.
hope it helps
but i dont think you could get away with using anything xenos at all, Holy Emperor and all that....
Have a search around on Google for some info on them and see if they match what you're thinking about doing - maybe your force could be a Relictors successor chapter for example?
Or maybe they're under the influence of a Rogue Chaplain or Librarian and on the cusp of turning traitor?

I like the Relictors Idea personally. Especially if you have a lot of chaos bits layin around. Be cool to see SM terminator legs/one arm/head with CSM Body an other arm. Similar to the Space wolves that got lost in the warp and had to repair their equipment with whatever they could find (I am not up to date on my fluff, no idea what they are called or if I am even right on that)
