im designing a new amy list and was trying to work out if heavy weapons squads can be transported in a chimera (im pretty sure they can but i just thought id ask) and also most importantly can they fire from a chimera?
No heavy weapons can't
No heavy weapons cant what? i asked 2 questions. Also i want something to back it up eg a rule in the guard codex or the 40k rulebook.
But the chimera must stay still for the heavy weapons to fire and you can't buy chimeras for heavy weapon squads, you need to either join them with a lord commissar (who is allowed to buy a chimera.) or put them in a chimera bought for another unit after the battle begins.
Though you probably don't want to, not for a competitive list anyway.
The actual answer is: Yes, you can fire 3 lascannons (or whatever) from inside a Chimera. All the codex says is 5 models may fire. But...
1) You would have to buy an Infantry Squad Chimera for them to use, as they can't buy their own.
2) Since it's not their Chimera, they can't deploy in it. So you'll lose a turn of firing moving them into it.
So it doesn't really make much sense to do this.

Generally speaking, if you're taking a heavy weapons squad, you're going to want to put them in a good firing position in the back to cover your advancing units. They can't fire if they move, so putting them in a chimera wastes the whole purpose of taking a chimera, which is giving mobility, protection, and a little extra firepower to your offensive troops. I play a semi-mechanized list, and I generally have 3 chimeras loaded with heavily armed vets or command squads leading the charge, with an infantry platoon with a heavy weapons squad in the back as fire support.
It's workable so long as your list has mobility other than the Chimeras serving as bunkers. Still, you may have better luck with a special weapons squad carrying grenade launchers.
