and now, the original post...
recently I've become a bit bored with the current Space Marine army list - or to be more precise, I think there are some things missing from it.
Now before you get worried, I'm not talking about adding squads of battlecannon-toting Terminators with Storm Shields or a Chapter Master called Obsidian Darkblade McKnightNight The Slayer Of Worlds who has a S10 power weapon that ignores invulnerable saves. I'm talking about filling some gaps in the Space Marine roster that are not covered in the current codex - I'm not inventing anything new.
The first of these I have picked is the Land Raider Spartan - this was a rogue trader era Land Raider conversion that allowed it to carry Terminators (as it couldn't at the time). Since our current Land Raiders can, I needed to do something new, so I instead made it a stripped down Land Raider that can carry 20 models - or 10 Terminators.
It's also an easy to use one as all you have to do is magnetise the sponsons on your Land Raiders so you can swap them out with plain doors (I have already done this and put a guide up in another thread), et voila, Land Raider Spartan.
Anyway, I have posted the rules for it in the Rules Development forum, here:
Land Raider Spartan (Space Marine Heavy Support - Land Raider Spartan)
Have a look and give me feedback here or there... I have a few more to come!
It's a pre-heresy era design so it didn't carry assault cannons, and it predated the use of melta weapons and frag launchers on landraiders (lost technology until half way though M39).
Extra armour was standard. The siege of terra ruleset prices it at 300 points but that included ceramite shielding and the venerable rule (but not PotMS - it was assumed the AI was running damage control). There were also rules for passengers shooting from the landraider itself, without all of these perks it could be costed much cheaper than 300.
I've seen the old model (blegh) and rules, but they apply to a modification of the old MkI LR rather than the newer one, which is what I've tried to do to make it more accessible.
As I stated in the fluff, this isn't the old Spartan, it's more me taking the idea and making a new version of it. The Assault Cannon option is there because I stated in the fluff that the Omega Marines converted all of their variants, and if you take the sponsons off a Crusader you are left with Assault Cannons. This version also doesn't have the top platform either, it's just a stripped down normal Land Raider, hence the costing.
I've tried to make it so that it's a bit different without requiring too many extra rules to get your head around, or much work to model.
Well, it can carry a full ten man squad of terminators basically. It's not really designed to set the world afire, I just wanted to fill what I see as a gap. I also just like the idea of a LR with no sponsons on for some reason!
Wow...can you actually physically place 10 terminators in just 1 vehicle. Even without the sponsoons, that seems to be a bit of a stretch...unless the spartan is actually larger than the vanilla LR physically. I mean, we're talking about a transport that can carry what would normally require 2 transports to do.
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2
The Crusader can carry 8 Terminators and still has sponsors; 2 more without them isn't that much of a stretch. I've also described it as being stripped down internally as well.
I've added another set of rules today, this time for the old favourite the Sabre Tank Hunter, another Rogue Trader era plasticard conversion, this time of the Rhino chassis, but modern versions tend to be a Laser Destroyer on a Vindicator Chassis and look quite nice
Sabre Tank Hunter (Space Marine Heavy Support - Sabre Tank Hunter)
I've added another set of rules, this time for a unit not seen before! It is mentioned in one of the Horus Heresy Audiobooks, and is described as an "assault gun" or artillery piece. Obviously this brought to mind a Rhino with an Earthshaker! More details in the thread:
Thunderstrike Artillery Tank (Space Marine Heavy Support - Thunderstrike Artillery Tank)
...and I've put some more in, this time for a super super elite (but appropriately costly) unit:
Terminator Honour Guard Squad (Space Marine HQ - Terminator Honour Guard)
