Is Marneus Calgar worth his points, I have used him a couple of times but he has not done much. Would you suggest I keep using him?
to answer the question flat out no he isnt worth the points. very rarely does he get back what he costs. his bread and butter is allowing you to auto pass or fail any morale test for any unit. if your looking for a similar style of play for less points try running lysander. but if you really like him theres no need to stop using him. he might eventually have a big game.
A moment of weakness spawns a life tme of heresy...
The problem with him is he's too slow moving, which is unfortunately the same with Lysander, but you're saving 65 pts (I hope you're not running Calgar in power armour) for an army which should, in most cases, only run one HQ anyway. In your average game (I see 1500-2500 the most) those can be invaluable. I lately wrote a list around Calgar which I think worked quite well in the few games I played with it (3W-1D-2L), which you can find somewhere recent in the army lists section, but ultimately even in a list like I wrote there will always be a better option from a cheaper character.
I have used him quite a bit and I find him to be a great asset, but I tend to only use him in larger games where he can come into his own and can be bundled in a Land Raider with some TH/SS Terminators or similar. This combo basically carried an entire flank during an Apoc game I had a couple of years ago.
His leadership rule is brilliant as it takes any worrying about morale out of the equation, it becomes a choice, which is very handy!
In smaller games though, he can be a bit of a point sink and as had been said he will find trouble making his points back. He's best used against stuff that he is needed to kill, and they tend to be more abundant in larger games.
Still I am an Ultramarine player so I am biased
Much like what has been said before, and I'm sure will be said after me Marneus Augustus Calgar is not worth his high points cost in an average game. The trick here lies with the fact that every game you play will not be average. With Appocalypse still having the odd influx of new Formations through White Dwarves and their website the expansion still grabs the attention of many players which goes a long way into helping Calgar to come into his own. Choosing to pass or fail ALL of your morale checks alone can be worth his 250pt price tag alone when you have to roll 3000+ points worth.
On top of this it gives Calgar the option to really get stuck in every now and then against the larger targets that might just make his points back and with the flooded boards you might (and I do mean might) just hit something with that S10 AP1 Orbital Bombardment he has.
Unlike what has been said by Humaneater I would personally shy away from the Armour of Antilochus, as he should have the cover of whatever unit you placed him in as well as 4 wounds and Eternal Warrior the kind of dedicated firepower he would attract will most likely already be of the AP1-2 variety and aside from the points you spend on the armour it stops Calgar from preforming a Sweeping Advance.
So to recap: Don't take him in any game there isn't the possibility of staring down a Baneblade, Make sure to go hunting for big game, and finally I'd shy away from the armour upgrade as it will stop Calgar from running down his opponents and therefore repaying his hideous price tag.
Ask me about the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White Bike!!!
I'm planning on using him with 10 assualt terminators, 5 t.hammers and 5 l.claws. Would you suggest deepstriking him?
If you have teleport homers, a Damocles Rhino and / or locator beacons about then yes - otherwise no, as that is TOO MUCH to lose to a DS mishap!
Okay, what about putting him in a land raider crusader with some termis?
That definitely works but obviously you can't field a full ten man squad with him that way. I actually used that very formation to great success in, have a read and you can see they managed to do some serious damage:
5000 pts Apocalypse Chaos vs Imperial
As you can see in there I also stuck a Librarian in Terminator Armour with him, Null Zone being the perfect solution to anything they wanted to krump that had an invulnerable save.
Marneus did pretty well with his squad. Thanks for the help I think I will get a Librarian to go with calgar and his squad.
