Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have two land raider crusader boxes that I purchased a couple of years ago for my brother's black templar army. he never put them together, and later quit playing black templars. Recently, I started up a Blood Angels army and I don't have a ton of cash to buy stuff so I decided to use the Land Raiders.
Right now, the army consists of just two units of Assault squads with jump packs and a tactical squad that will deep strike in the Land Raider. My next purchase will be another tactical squad for the second Land Raider. My question..
Which type of Land Raider should I use? The Crusader was cool for Black Templars, because it had such a large transport capacity. I wont be needing the extra size for the tactical squad, though. I was thinking on buying the bits and switching it to a Redeemer, for the template weapons that ignore cover. Or maybe just a plain Land Raider for the lascannons, since the army will lack long range attacks.
Thanks for the input.

I personally would advise against the regular land raider (controversial as the ranged anti tank is very useful for BA), but this is because I feel that since you should be constantly on the move, a meltagun in the tactical squad can be used instead. No, I've found that my angels are constantly outnumbered (for good reason too). Thus the other 2 patterns come into play.
The firepower on the crusader makes it very effective at dealing with numerous low save targets like guard. But if given a multimelta, then it is just as useful vs tanks. The main advantage for the crusader over the redeemer though is the fact that at s4 and combined with POMS, it can shoot all 4 guns while moving 6".
The redeemer is great for toasting high save creatures. As BA are so mobile, the range loss on this pattern isn't a great disadvantage. However, this variant loses out slightly due to the shape of the tank. The hull will get in the way of at least 1 sponson flame meaning you are effectively reduced to 1 flame template attack per turn.
Sice transport capacity is not an issue, firepower is the sole reason behind the choice, and for me the crusader wins out due to the effectiveness of the redeemer being reduced by the hull shape. The crusader is solid and when given the multimelta can deal with both armour and squishier targets making it as versatile as needed considering the points sink.
Also I would strongly advise aginst deep striking the LR. It has the AV to withstand getting shot as it advances, can shoot and whittle the enemy's numbers down before closing in (vital for a small elite army), and removes the chance of DS mishap which can potentially see your tank + tooled up unit get destroyed.
Hope this helps make your mind up
To answer your question in the title, none. Risking a 250pt vehicle + transported unit in a deep strike is to me, somewhat insane! Especially when you can move 12" and still fire one weapon anyway.
Just think of the utter shame you would feel from having your Landraider taken out by a lone guardsman in the wrong place!
Even with a beacon, I don't see how it's worth it. You'll have to wait for it to make the reserve roll (and without DoA you don't get a reroll for Land Raiders), and you can't assault out of a Deep Striking vehicle. You'd be better off just driving it up and taking a potential hit or two.
This has got to be one of the stupidest rules in 40k, they should have given it something like the Monolith, units see 50 tons of tank coming down on their heads and get the hell out of the way!
I would recommend against DSing a LR. Main reason is that it will take forever to get into the game. The only time I reserve one is if the enemy has a lot of alpha strike antitank, ie IG with Valkameltavets. Then just drive on your board edge, gives you 36" to stay far away from them and toast their AT from a distance.
Wow not to get out of point but i hadnt realished that you can deep strike a LR!!!!
And i cant believe you loose a tank to a gretchin....Come on its a 50 ton tank with another 50tons of terminators inside!!!!
Give me a break!!!!
Praise be to the Emperor!!
