What do you think of this for a command squad? I want this command squad to be the centerpiece of my army, and bikes are not an option.
Four meltaguns, three lightning claws, one power fist, possibly one guy with a banner. This adds up to about 240 points, banner included.
So, what do you all think? Good, Bad, Cheesy? Is this a great way to outfit a command squad or not? If not, what do you think is a good layout for a command squad, without bikes.
There's 2 schools of thought to command squads. You can either make a cheap shooty unit, or an expensive melee juggernought. I advise against trying to do both at once.
4 guys with Claws and Storm Shields would give you a resilient, powerful unit...but you'd also be spending a ton of points for a squad that still only has a 3+ save and FNP. At that point, you might as well consider buying terminators, as they may well prove to be cheaper.
The other option is to load them for dakka. 2 guys with flamers, 2 guys with meltaguns, and drive them around in a rhino using their toys to solve problems for you. Alternatively, you could equip all 4 guys with plasma rifles, using their rapid firing high strength low AP goodness to murder heavy infantry, MCs, and light tanks with equal ease.
Id say dont put all your eggs in one basket.A points heavy command squad would be a points sink and would have a big nice red target painted over it.The role of the coomand squad(at least as i see it)is to be a tool and not be points heavy as to be afraid of using them.
To quote from watchwood: Drive them around in a rhino using their toys to solve problems for you.Are you not so good in CC?Tool em up for CC.Want something shootie?Give em ranged guns. You most certenly need a transport though.
Praise be to the Emperor!!
What about putting a shooty command squad in a razorback if you've got the points?
The problem with using the razerback for that is that the razerback doesn't have any fire points - which means they'd have to jump out to fire anything at all, which might not be the best decision against some armies. It'll often be the case that you'll want that extra layer of tank between your guys and the enemy.
Aaah I see... didn't know that about the razorback... i'll keep that in mind.
This is all good advice. I played against a command squad with 4 plasma guns one time. It tore my BA up! Especially my expensive Sanguinary Guard with their precious gold-layered 2+ artificer armor save... waaaahhh!!!
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
Pretty much, ya. Use them against high toughness or highly armoured targets - not so much hammer/shield terminators though, those you either need to run away from or swamp with tons of bolter rounds.
Thanks for starting this thread H bomb, I've got lots of top tips from it. Time to rethink my command squads.
Jager bombs. Very efficient at wiping out friend or foe.
